The Academy Awards: HELP!

I promised a friend I'd help her plan and organize her birthday party, and then she tells me all I can do for her is to adapt the concept of Oscar's Night to the party and she'd not ask for anything else.

Problem is, I have never seen an Awards ceremony or whatever, and I have blindly accepted her request. Now, I must find out how to make invitations, program, decorations, music, etc Oscars-themed.

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I mean, what happens generally in any Oscars-night anyway? (All my friends and I know about is the red carpet entrance. Wah.)

Well, being an American who watches way too much TV and loves watching the Oscars, I can help you. It's really, really formal, and glamourous. It's basically this 3 1/2 hour show of movies/directors/producers/etc. getting the highest honor. There's musicals and the host is usually really funny. Oh, yea, the envelope is a big part of it too.

Ah! My saviour! *glomps*

Well, I get the basic idea, but is there any way, besides some musical numbers etc, that things that happen at the Oscars can be adapted to a party? Awards, I was thinking, are good, but then it's my friend's birthday so she should be more or less in the spotlight, right?

Wait, do you mean the envelope where the results are? Any suggestion as to how that can be a part of the party? Thanks! :)

Think Gryffindor colors. It's all about the red and gold.

And dramatic lighting. Not everything's bright, so there are bits of bright and bits of dark.

Okay, nice dramatic lighting. Check. Cool, thanks. :)
