Confessions of a Fandom Addict

Contrary to popular belief, the HP fandom is not a wanky place to be. It might be wankier than most other fandoms, but not THAT wanky. If you know where to go, I guess.

I am addicted to fandom. Fandom has me wrapped around her finger.

No, really. It has. I have PROOF:

1. I've limited my surfing area to a VERY concentrated place, and still it takes me hours to finish business online.

And all of it is related to fandom: LJ, RPGs, LJ, maybe FAP, LJ. Gmail and Yahoo!mail because of the fandom, too. I hardly even check my account for real life anymore, because DUDE! I see those people every day already, and even if I don't, they're just a text message away. Pfft.

And indeed, if it weren't for these places, I don't see where else I ought to spend my surfing time on. :P

I don't know what my average time online is, but I'm online every day, which is more than how much time my friends spend online.

2. I've become involved.

Involvement always means more time to commit to the fandom, and I wouldn't have committed if I didn't want to, or feel like it.

[livejournal.com profile] hd100 is the bestest drabble place, and I feel like I owe a drabble a week to it, regardless.

[livejournal.com profile] out_of_the_fire is pretty slow right now, but I love what's going on and I love that I'm in it.

[livejournal.com profile] isolation_tower is SO amazing and I am definitely happy I'm doing it. It's only been up a couple of days and already it's been cause for many gigglinginsanely!Slumber moments.

3. I've become emotionally attached.

Which is, considering me, verreh hard to do. It's kind of evil to say this, but while I love my friends in real life as well, I don't have the urge to talk to them every day. Or write them letters. Or call them up. Or miss them terribly when they're not online!!!

It may be the distance, and the fact that I'm not really taking anything for granted when it comes to my fandom friends, but really. I love you all!

And anyone who has got me saying "I love you", which while in text is easier to say than in person but which I find hard uttering to anyone (even my parents!) anyway, has to be someone I'm really attached to, right?

4. Lines have been blurred, crossed, and consequently ignored altogether. In a good way.

[livejournal.com profile] unrouen can attest to this. She knows I have this big pet peeve about how I have to keep my fandom activities completely separate from my real life activities, and recently I've seen a big blurry line between fandom life and real life. It's all the paranoia I used to carry around with me before, about strangers on the net and what they do to 13 year old girls who aren't careful, thus I must keep my real life identity a secret.

Then it turned to keeping my fandom life secret from RL friends. Then I found I couldn't keep it all in, and now they know I have this journal (but they don't know where, exactly, just that I have a second journal) and that I have friends online.

5. I think in timezone.

Friend: Hey Slumber, what time is it now?
Me: In which timezone?
Friend: Huh?
Me: You do realize time is relative, don't you? That while we're sitting here waiting for our ride home at 4pm, someone's probably eating dinner at 6pm in Australia, or just waking up at 8am in England, eating breakfast at 9am in Sweden, or maybe still asleep in 4am New York and 3am Iowa, or.
Friend: O.O I just wanted to know if the computer lab's still open!

PS. You should check out [livejournal.com profile] hd_notes. As one comment said, it's like shoebox_project!H/D. And so nobody can tell me I didn't tell them. ;P

I am in the fandom and I am not wanky therefore fandom is not a wanky place.

(Obviously fandom = me. Aren't I just what you get up in the morning for?)

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't I just what you get up in the morning for?

*giggles* Yes you are, Lucy. Among other things. :D

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've got YM... Haven't tried downloading AIM, but if it's any similar to MSN, I may not be able to download it. Or something.

[identity profile] klave.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
AIM is in no way similar to MSN except for it being shit. Try it, you might like it.

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'll see if I can download it over the weekend. :P

[identity profile] klave.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
:) Yay! Then I can have some Sir Slumbalove, IM style!

Yes. [livejournal.com profile] out_of_the_fire is The Rockage. It is.

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* Absolutely. :D

[identity profile] black-ace.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom is life. Much more interesting than RL anyway. And us wanky? Nah. ^_^ *loves*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed on all levels. *loves back* :D

[identity profile] certifieddork.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Contrary to popular belief, the HP fandom is not a wanky place to be. It might be wankier than most other fandoms, but not THAT wanky. If you know where to go, I guess.

Agreed. Sometimes I hear little whispers of wankage, but I'm so far removed from them that they don't bother me. Thus, my corner of fandom isn't wanky at all, which means I can love it that much more. :D

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And the littlest whispers cannot possibly overthrow the great big loff. :D

[identity profile] prettyveela.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Slumber I LOVE this entry. I'm going to add it to my memories.

You are a perfect example of why I wrote my "Where do we go from here?" LJ entry a few weeks back. What on EARTH are we going to do after Harry Potter has died down? It won't be anywhere NEAR as active once all the secrets of Harry Potter are told in book 7. *sigh*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, thank you! *schnoogles*

This is why it's also good that we're fans now, when the HP books are still being finished. We have plenty of time until the sixth and seventh books, and then the fourth to the seventh movies. Beyond that, I think what's going to keep us together is less Harry Potter than it is fandom by itself. Hopefully by then we'd have developed many woderful relationships that it'll take more than the end of HP to end them. :D

*loves*

And while it's 6 p.m. here in Iowa, I am totally jealous that Blaise gets stuck to Ron and I spend an obscene amount of time composing LJ fandom entries at work.

And there is little cause for wank once you're cozy in a fandom place.

XOXO

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
True, true. :P *loves*

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
YES WELL AT LEAST BLAISE AND RON HAVEN'T GONE OFF SMOKING TOGETHER, LIKE *OTHER* PEOPLE I COULD MENTION!!!

Not that I am jealous, not one bit, not at all.

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, of course you're not. *blinks innocently*

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Completely and utterly non-jealous over here!

[identity profile] idroppedarice.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything you said here is exactly how I feel.

*loveslovesloves*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ESP? :P *loveschnoogles*

[identity profile] jetsam-porridge.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think in timezones.

*laughs* That's me in a nutshell, only just with one timezone.
FRIEND: What time is it?
CHARLI: 4am.
FRIEND: ...um, it's lunchtime?
CHARLI: Oh. Right. 1 o'clock!
*rolls eyes*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. England? :P (But really, who can help it? :D)

[identity profile] jetsam-porridge.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
^_^ You know your timezones. XP

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
That I do. :P

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you on all those points! Fandom is like, totally my LIFE at the moment! And I really don't want it to be any other way.

*LOVELOVELOVELOVE*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
No... RON is your life. ;P Yes, I don't want it any other way, too! *huggles and loves*

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Ron is lovely, isn't he. I am glad he is my life!!!

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
ICON LOVE. :P Ron's got Harry's behind back! :D

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2004-08-12 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I have this one pic of Dan and Ru at a premiere and Ru really does have Dan's behind. I am sure of it!
