quick heads up

I don't often do flist cuts (I feel like this is the first in... three, four years? PROBABLY EIGHT ACTUALLY, lol, I am a hoarder okay <.< >.>), but I just did a little flist trimming. Took out deleted LJs (all of the strikethroughs are making me so sad :(), comms I don't really follow anymore (Torchwood ILU, but lbr you were never really one of my fandoms :\), and people who have unfriended me and whose journals are primarily flocked (IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE, BUT IT'S OVER NOW, IT MUST HAVE BEEN GOOD, BUT I LOST IT SOMEHOWWWWWW).

Technically, none of you should be concerned, and I wasn't going to make this post at all, but it occurs to me that if I accidentally cut someone I shouldn't have (which is likely, I did have 13 pages to go through :|) they might end up thinking it's about something it isn't about, so here's the explanation for what's going on.

So if you're reading this and you've been unfriended by mistake, let me know and I'll add you back. Also, SORRY, DID NOT MEAN IT I PROMISE. <3

December Drabbles

Here's the (writing) plan for the rest of the year (HOLY SHIT WHERE DID 2011 GO?):

  • Finish [livejournal.com profile] hp_zombiefest - due Sept30 BLAH should be done soon though
  • Finish [livejournal.com profile] interhouse_fest - due Oct25 (halfway through!)
  • Plot out and finish [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus - due Nov22
  • Write that fic for [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte - let's say it's due Dec31
  • Drabbles for the flist for December

I did holiday drabbles once-- alllllll the way back in 2004. SEVEN YEARS AGO. Jesus. I can't believe I'm still friends with some of you from there! :| :D

Anyway in celebration of friends old and new (*waves to all the new friends*) I figured it was time to do this again.

The rules:
  1. Comment with at least three characters or ships.
  2. Add a selection of prompts for each.

And that's it. All ships are welcome-- I'm tempted to say the rarer the better, but some of you might see that as a challenge. :| Harry Potter is my preferred fandom, but I am willing to take on the following as well (with the warning that I've never actually written anything for these so apologies if I don't get any of their voices right):
* Criminal Minds
* Doctor Who (new series only)
* Feed, Deadline, that universe in general
* GoT (still slogging through the second book, sorry)
* Gossip Girl
* Hockey (gen only)
* How I Met Your Mother
* Sherlock (BBC)

Plus, IDK, anything that I may be familiar with. If in doubt, just add Harry Potter prompts and the fandoms/ships/etc that you like and I'll see what I can do for you. :D

Anyway I know it's only September but I'm planning on not writing much (or at all) in November and I figured I should get a head start on this ASAP. Also September is a -ber month. TOTALLY holiday season tiemz already.

today is a day of pimping

Goooooooood morning, Eljay! Lots of fantabulous, fandomy things are afoot! And good things come in threes, so here we go:

  1. [livejournal.com profile] hp_writers_desk

    HP Writer's Desk is basically an extended form of workshop that we usually see in HP cons, borne out of the realization that hey, not everyone who writes can attend cons, so why shouldn't people everywhere be unable to discuss the craft of writing, and writing HP fiction in particular?

    It's only just been set up and it hasn't got much in it yet, but I've volunteered to help [livejournal.com profile] silver_ariel run it with [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic, and it will begin with planned posts/workshops (though eventually, we'll open it up to everyone-- we're just testing the waters at the moment and would like to familiarize ourselves and everyone with the comm format first). We're looking for ideas and suggestions to have an idea as to what people would love to see on the comm, so go! Join! :D

  2. [livejournal.com profile] bribitribbit is running the The Kisses/Cuddles Battle of 2009, and it is opening up its Prompt Post til February 7 at noon, EST.

    As Brit said:

    This is a challenge not only for those rare people who, like me, get really goopy around Valentine's day and want to read tons of fic about their favorite pairings being dorky and cuddly, but also for the people who just want to see their favorite standoffish character kiss his son on the forehead, or two friends hugging after a long fight. Because awwww.

  3. And finally, a FIC REC: Bothersome Things by Anon over at [livejournal.com profile] hp_nextgen_fest.

    Yes, it's Charlie/Teddy, and yes, it's Percy/Teddy, and yes, it's pushing 10k words. But this has to be one of the most brilliantly narrated stories I've ever read. Albus pretty much steals the show from Charlie, Teddy, and Percy, but that only shows how well-written this story is, because it's hard not to adore Charlie, Teddy, and Percy here either (and yes, that's a big deal-- I'm normally not a fan of Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs :P). ♥

i was gonna ask this in some Q&A community

but asking the flist is so much more fun!

SO! Based on a conversation I'm having with [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte, I would like to know what you--yes, you--would do if the person you are currently seeing (or the last one you were seeing, or someone you would like to be seeing, or the cashier you were flirting with at the store today) ~magically~ switched genders.
  • How long have you been seeing this person?
  • Would you keep seeing this person?
  • Will the relationship stay romantic, sexual, both, or platonic?
  • Do you identify as straight, gay, bisexual, asexual, or something else?

Speaking of gender switching-- is this something that, like, could ~hypothetically~ happen in the Harry Potter universe? In Tales of Beedle the Bard, it's mentioned that Transfiguring a person into an animal is not the same as becoming an Animagus, because Transfiguration makes the object of the spell lose his/her consciousness while an Animagus retains it. So if you can Transfigure a living person into a living being, does that not then mean that you can Transfigure a living person into another living person? (Which, incidentally, renders Polyjuice moot, unless the potion is somehow easier to do or something.)

And really, now that I think about it, this goes into two different discussions, doesn't it?

A. If Transfiguring people into people works, then... )

B. If there is some sort of ~rule~ rendering that theory an impossibility... )

God, Jo. I would really love it if you were more meticulous with how your universe worked, but that would take all the fun out of writing fics, wouldn't it?

GAH. Backing GJ up should not be this complicated

Guys, guys, guys.

GreatestJournal is back up, but only til January 30.

Less than two weeks to get in, back the SHIT up from old RPs, and then leave, right?

Except LJBook doesn't have GJ in its options, I get an error when I try to use ljArchive, and when I try to export entries from GJ itself, I get nothing.

What do I have to do around here to back GJ up?? D:

you know what Mad-Eye Moody used to say...

If you've been living under a rock, you should probably know that LJ has laid off a lot of people, and basically, people are either saying it's the end of LJ or that people are just getting spooked all over again.

The funny thing is, it's actually GJ that bit the dust. :|

Well, whatever, I would rather just make sure I've got my LJ backed up properly. So I remembered my password for insanejournal (username, by the by, is also [livejournal.com profile] slumber, which is also my handle in journalfen), and now I am shopping around for a good back-up program. I'm using a Mac, and I'd prefer it if the program also imported comments from the entries.

Flist, any good ideas/suggestions?

ETA: I have started friending some of you on IJ, which I did oh-so-systematically by friending one person I knew in IJ, and from that person's flist, looking at who else I knew, and from there, well, you get it. :| Haven't backed my LJ up there yet, but yes. You may also leave your IJ/JF username here and I'll get to friending.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In November I committed genocide... Sorry about that, [livejournal.com profile] scarlet_malfoy (-5000 points). In July I invaded Iraq, broke it, and couldn't glue it back together before Mom got home (-1012 points). In June I gave [livejournal.com profile] malady a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). Last Sunday [livejournal.com profile] boho and I robbed a bank (-50 points). In May I set [livejournal.com profile] webgoblin's puppy on fire (-66 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-6078 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

Sincerely,
slumber

In what is perhaps my most completely random LJ entry ever...

I am giving away this shirt to one person on my flist.

It is from 200 Nipples, a site that sells only 100 designs of a shirt ever (and prices them each from $1 to $100-- I got this for $26), and as their description goes:

This is for the people who think, “It’s my own spit in that ocean, dammit, and if you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain. I’m headed for the polls!”

Yes, it is free. Yes, it is random. Yes, I'm shipping it for free, too. No, I wasn't asked to do this by anyone else. It's a slow day in the office, I got bored. And yes, there are strings attached:

  • You must comment with an election-themed haiku;
  • You should be female (as the shirt has been ordered for the female figure);
  • Keep in mind the shirt was bought in size medium;
  • You've got to be an American citizen (unless there's a way you can spin this so it's ironic that you're wearing a shirt despite not being American);
  • You should have actually voted for this election (and prove it, too, unless you're the ironic non-American)

This shirt ships out on November 12, so I'll leave this post open for whoever wants to comment til then.

flist, this is for you

This seems to have been like, a really crappy week for a lot of you guys, since I feel like all the comments I've left have all been cuddles-- which I don't even think are helping, and honestly, if I knew what would actually work, I'd do it in a heartbeat. :\ This is the best I could come up with, and I hope that if you're feeling a bit down, this helps, even just a little bit. ♥♥♥

Terminus semi-live-blogging

I browsed my flist and there were no Terminus updates, which makes me sad, but um. That's because the Hilton charges quite a lot for internet, which is the last thing you probably want to do in a conference for people who all got into the conference because of the internet.

I'm just saying.

So, like, I went to Wrock Chicago last Wednesday and listened to the headliners for the first time ever (except I've heard Draco and Harry before) with [livejournal.com profile] cmere ([livejournal.com profile] miss_charmed we have photos!), [livejournal.com profile] illuminations, [livejournal.com profile] jazzyjello, [livejournal.com profile] reallycorking, and I think [livejournal.com profile] longleggedit. Did not get to meet [livejournal.com profile] acidpop25 because of massive number-exchanging fail *facepalm* but Saturday will be better!

Wrock Highlights:
  • Everyone jumping so much the floor was shaking, til we were told to stop because there's a conference downstairs and the people there are concerned.
  • People actually following the rules, which, as [livejournal.com profile] reallycorking pointed out, says a lot about HP fans.
  • The Remus Lupins saying "To hell with that, this is a rock concert, I want to see you guys ROCK!"
  • [livejournal.com profile] cmere shouting "That is NOT Remus Lupin!" in response (because come on, Remus would follow the rules) JUST as the crowd quieted down, so that a couple of people (and maybe Remus Lupin) heard. ♥

Yesterday I met up with [livejournal.com profile] perculious and [livejournal.com profile] moonlitmercury, who I'm rooming with as well as Emily, Tai's cousin, aaaaaaaand we ran into [livejournal.com profile] slash_a_holic while checking in.

Registration Highlight:
  • [livejournal.com profile] perculious singing and dancing "My Dad is Rich" for a 17-cassette audiobook of Order of the Phoenix.
  • Finding out that I'm dueling.

    Yeah, no idea what that means either. I'm like. "What, really?" Apparently dueling means going up to your "mark" (kinda hard to do in a con of 1500) and saying their name in a conversational voice ("Hello, Rainsparkles25!") before waving your wand (Does my pen count for a wand?) and saying "Tumultosa!" (I'm sure I got that spell wrong; shit. :|)
  • Having possibly the only two Terry Boot fangirls in the world in the same room. [livejournal.com profile] perculious and I are totally going to drive our roommates up the wall.

    Quoth Emily: "Who's Terry Boot?"

    Quoth [livejournal.com profile] moonlitmercury: We should totally have a Wizard Rock band. We can call it Terry's Boots. ♥♥♥

    Quoth [livejournal.com profile] moonlitmercury: You guys are terrible.
    [livejournal.com profile] perculious: Did you say we were terrible?
    [livejournal.com profile] slumber: Did you spell that with a y?

    But it is amazing. The password to our hotel-room-slash-dorm is like. Terry Boot is awesome.
  • Finding really good programming.
  • Finding Theodore Nott's rumored to have been cast in the movies already (LINE YOU TOTES HAVE TO SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HIM HE IS ALL KINDS OF PRETTY AWESOME. NGH. I'm gonna get the pic emailed to me so I can email it to you. :|)

The great big dinner was very Hogwarts-esque, which is cool except I felt like a first year, haha. Also, my roommates are all in the same house and I'm like. Not. Tragic.

Terminus staff keep telling us not to scare the Muggles away. I wonder why. :|

hey flist! are you procrastinating right now?

I bet you are--so let me help you!

This is a logic puzzle challenge thing that I picked up from random-LJ-surfing. It apparently consumes your life until you solve it. Time yourself for fun! :|

The rules are in Japanese Chinese, but I picked up a nifty translation too!

  • Everybody has to cross the river
  • Only 2 people on the raft at a time
  • The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence.
  • The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's presence.
  • The thief cannot stay with any family member if the Policeman is not there.
  • Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.
  • To start, click on the big blue circle on the right.
  • To move the people, click on them.
  • To move the raft, click on the poles on the opposite sides of the river.

I finished in about fifteen minutes, but mostly did it through trial and error. This time of night is no time for logic, obviously.

i posted this in a torchwood comm...

...but I figure some of my flisters might be interested too. :|

So [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte and I, while waiting for Torchwood Season 2, have taken to watching through the first season, and then perhaps the last three episodes of Doctor Who's last season.

We were nearing the end of Episode 3: Ghost Machines, when [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte noted something just a little bit peculiar in the wall of The Hub.

three orders of business

  1. A Public Service Announcement:

    Mac Users: You may want to be warned about a sort of trojan spreading around designed particularly for Quicktime users. (Though it isn't really the point of the article to which I just linked you, really. :|)

  2. A Question

    I joined a holiday card exchange community and one of the occasions we're asked to write cards about is the Winter Solstice, or Yule.

    And I have no idea what sort of greetings are used for it. :| (On that note, coming from a country with primarily one religion in one area and a different one in another, I don't actually know much about Jews either.) The rest (like dates and stuff) I'm sure I can google, but if any of you do know more about this please to be telling me any special rituals or events regarding Winter Solstice?

  3. The Christmas Card Thingy

    Guys, I've already bought the cards, but I realised it would be SO much cooler if I did it another way, as inspired by the comm I previously mentioned.

    If you trust me not to stalk you, please do leave me your address in a comment (I'm screening them, don't worry), along with characters you'd want to receive christmas card/greetings from, and I shall attempt to be in character for you. :| or something. maybe i'll just send you regular christmas cards. :| but you know. in case this is a good idea. :D (I DO have a seal that I've been dying to use since I bought it in Denmark, if I can only find it now. :|)

    Also, my address can be found here. I think it's been arbitrarily filtered so if you can't see it but want to send me a card as well then comment and I'll add you to the filter. (S'the problem with those things--you set them up once and then forget to add people to them. :|)

ETA: If I have your address, and I may or may not have lost it, depending, I'll likely send you something still. :|

crackified, part 2 (a journey in photos)

Clearly, I should never be given whipped cream for dinner. Or autumn brings out the craΩ--OH MY GOD I JUST MADE AN OHM. *IS AWESOME*--zy in me. :|

Anyway, today I seriously feared for my life, when an UNKNOWN BOX from an UNKNOWN ADDRESS was delivered to ME.

Dell? I did not order anything from Dell. I have a Mac! Who could this box be FROM?
Dun dun dun DUN.

I tell Line and Hetty that if someone hated me, and planted a bomb to send to me, to be activated as soon as I opened the box, then they'd know what happened.

Strange, though. No BOOM. And plenty of.. newspaper? Someone sent me NEWSPAPER.

Oh, no, wait. Not newspaper after all!

Could it be? Why, yes, it could! It's shamelessly obnoxious 90s memorabilia!

(In other news, Ticca, it's arrived!)

I tried it out...

Insta-motel!

Oh my god I want it now. :| Ticca. This is awesome. (Also, email me for more details re: shipping to you. :P)
