Here's a rec for Sherlock Holmes meta!fic.

From [livejournal.com profile] starsparkle333's journal:

The prompt: Sherlock is a well-known fanartist whose online antics always land him on fandom_wank. John's a beloved BNF fanfiction author. They meet at a convention; geeky love ensues.

What ended up coming out of this was a long fic about fandom, wank, and community. There are actual journals made for all the characters. [livejournal.com profile] holmeschat is a real thing now. There are twitter accounts, devArt accounts, and a TVTropes page.

EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL.

Anyway, here are the links to all the parts of the fic on the kinkmeme. Definitely read through all the comments for more fun things. I have plans to go poke through all the associated journals tomorrow.

*waves* Been around commenting a bit, just not posting.

But I did want to post a rec, and I realize I am probably SO LATE with this, and I am pretty sure recs went around sometime last year when this first got posted, but I just read this last last week and you know how each ship in fandom has this epic story that more or less is the standard all stories written for the ship have to live up to? This is it. I think this is THE fic for Draco/Astoria.

Title: The House that Cedric Built
Author: [livejournal.com profile] annafugazzi
Rating: R
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Draco/Astoria
Category: 8th year fic, Romance/Drama
Summary: Draco didn't think there was much reason to hope for a better future. Asteria proved him wrong.

Recommendation: Two things first.

1) I did not like the idea of Astoria Greengrass at first. I always thought Draco would end up with Pansy. And while I was primarily a slasher, I was okay with that. When JKR first said Draco married someone called Astoria Greengrass, my first thought was "WHO THE FUCK WHY DID SHE DO THAT???" I was not happy.

2) But I felt like I had to make Draco/Astoria work in my personal canon, because it was now, in fact, canon. If you know me well, you know I'm pretty happy shipping characters that had a total of five mentions in the book. The reason behind that is probably because deep down, I am at heart a stickler for canon. Now that Book 7 and the epilogue have been released, I feel kind of compelled to keep stuff that I write within canon. I get a little bit more freedom writing about unimportant people like Terry Boot or Theodore Nott without feeling like I'm going way off course the actual events in the book or the interviews. And I also try to bridge JKR's inconsistencies. (There is an entire backstory in my mind about how Terry Boot could have been at Hogwarts in their 7th year despite being marked as a Muggleborn in JKR's notes, for example.)

So I wondered about D/A, and how they got together, and made up random stories in my head. I didn't like the idea of an arranged marriage, didn't like how the assumptions were less than favorable towards Astoria. I wondered how much like Pansy she would be, and because I'm a pretty big Draco fan, I wanted him to have a happy ending too.

Enter The House that Cedric Built. I stumbled onto it after coming up with an idea for a fic that I had titled "The House that Theodore Nott Built" which is probably why I started to read THTCB, and initially I thought I would just read it a bit and click out. It is a LONG story, and I never have any patience for anything more than 5,000 words. (Which is funny, because I'm well aware that my own stories recently have gone over that limit...)

But then I couldn't just put the story down. It is just so well-written, and compelling, and oh my god just one of those stories that you can see happening in canon, despite the fact that the trope used (8th year) might have elicited a scoff from me had I known that's what was going to happen.

IDK I just think, if you haven't yet, you should go and read it. :|

Three things made me happy yesterday.

  1. The Blackhawks

Liek duh, you guys, but they won against Dallas Stars and swept the series for the first time in 41 seasons asjd;fajskdlf;asdfj THIS IS A SEASON FOR RECORD-BREAKING, OKAY? The Blackhawks already broke a franchise record for the longest-winning streak (it was 8 before, now it's 9), and then they broke a drought in the Anaheim arena and the Shark Tank where the San Jose Sharks (top of the division, they're tough to beat especially at home, even if you go overtime) play, and then against Florida who they haven't beaten since 2002 either, or something, and now Dallas Stars. HELL YEAH. My boys are awesome.

And Patrick Kane apparently got a haircut and it got buzzed all the way when he wanted to "fade it up" so his golden curls are still there but WHO GETS HAIRCUTS WHEN THEY'RE ON ROADTRIPS? That makes no sense at all. NO SENSE.

OH, and they scored 9 points total, right, 3 goals and 6 assists, and you know you've got a fucking awesome team when all those 9 points belong to 9 FUCKING DIFFERENT PEOPLE. CRYING. THIS ROSTER. I LOVE IT SO. NEVER GO AWAY.

  2. My Mystery Cupid

Yesterday I got my [livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut fic!

Forgetting Mandy Brocklehurst. When Terry is left at the altar, he's pushed into going on his honeymoon alone. Except, Lisa has other ideas and is Unspeakable-y sneaky. And Blaise is a closet romantic. (Blaise/Terry; mentions of Terry/Mandy and Mandy/Stephen)

It's Blaise/Terry, you guys, I didn't expect that to be written at all! But it was cute, based off the initial premise of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but with a hotter, sexier Mila Kunis equivalent. :P And mmmmm. Terry. Terry.

Give it a read, and then shower it with love and comments, okay? Okay! :D

  3. Linds!

So [livejournal.com profile] longleggedgit was over in the city for her JET interview (which she totally ROCKED and PWNED and OMG JAPAN) and since she was here we met up for dinner and drinks! Ahahaha, I've never been to Gino's East before but that was cool, deep dish pizza in Chicago (LINE I forgot to tell you maybe we should TRY that the crust isn't like too pastry-ish like it was in Lou Malnati's or Uno's?) ftw! Even though we could only really get one slice because ahahahaha, huge serving.

Then we had $16.50 pitcher beers this is why I don't go out in the city on a regular basis (except to see hockey because that's special, duh) and then we went back to where Linds and her friends were staying to drink and watch the really bad sequel to Grease.

(AHAHAHAHHAHA LINDS IT WAS MICHELLE PFEIFFER.)

Then I went home and crawled to bed and slept til 7am, lol.

Goooooooood morning, Eljay! Lots of fantabulous, fandomy things are afoot! And good things come in threes, so here we go:

  1. [livejournal.com profile] hp_writers_desk

HP Writer's Desk is basically an extended form of workshop that we usually see in HP cons, borne out of the realization that hey, not everyone who writes can attend cons, so why shouldn't people everywhere be unable to discuss the craft of writing, and writing HP fiction in particular?

It's only just been set up and it hasn't got much in it yet, but I've volunteered to help [livejournal.com profile] silver_ariel run it with [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic, and it will begin with planned posts/workshops (though eventually, we'll open it up to everyone-- we're just testing the waters at the moment and would like to familiarize ourselves and everyone with the comm format first). We're looking for ideas and suggestions to have an idea as to what people would love to see on the comm, so go! Join! :D

  2. [livejournal.com profile] bribitribbit is running the The Kisses/Cuddles Battle of 2009, and it is opening up its Prompt Post til February 7 at noon, EST.

    As Brit said:

This is a challenge not only for those rare people who, like me, get really goopy around Valentine's day and want to read tons of fic about their favorite pairings being dorky and cuddly, but also for the people who just want to see their favorite standoffish character kiss his son on the forehead, or two friends hugging after a long fight. Because awwww.

  3. And finally, a FIC REC: Bothersome Things by Anon over at [livejournal.com profile] hp_nextgen_fest.

Yes, it's Charlie/Teddy, and yes, it's Percy/Teddy, and yes, it's pushing 10k words. But this has to be one of the most brilliantly narrated stories I've ever read. Albus pretty much steals the show from Charlie, Teddy, and Percy, but that only shows how well-written this story is, because it's hard not to adore Charlie, Teddy, and Percy here either (and yes, that's a big deal-- I'm normally not a fan of Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs :P). ♥

Who'd have thought internet-related work would actually reduce my personal time on the internet? I haven't touched this thing for nearly a month, eurgh. (I have been reading posts, so I am all caught up and stuff.)

Anyhoo, by now I'm sure at least half of you are aware of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. If you aren't, here's a bit of background.

Now, reaction to the series started out strongly positive (minus a few cries of "O-ver-RA-ted!", which we all expected anyway) but it has dwindled into discontent once the third installment came out. Understandably. The story veered into a totally different, yet apparently Whedonesque direction.

I still love it, though. And it isn't just Neil Patrick Harris, it's also-- gosh, so many things.

And because it contains potential spoilers, here under the cut are the 3 reasons why I actually liked the way it ended. )
The way I see it, this isn't the end of Dr Horrible. Whedon came into it looking to circumvent the issues that plagued the WGA Writer's Strike, and you know what, I think he found a way to do it. I wouldn't be surprised (and right now I wouldn't begrudge him) if he milked this for all it was worth.

Here's what I think is coming out of Dr Horrible:
  • DVD with a lot of extras, including a commentary in song
  • an official soundtrack
  • a comic book about Captain Hammer

Here's what I'd love to see:
  • a full-length Broadway production (he sounded like he was joking, but...)
  • more webisodes
  • a movie
  • a TV series (my vote's with this one, but I think Whedon should keep it an iTunes exclusive. How friggin' awesome would that be?)

And with all that they left hanging, with everything they hardly expounded on (see the list of villains credited at the Evil League of Evil), how could they not expand this?

PS. I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, won't see it til [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte comes up here this weekend, so I'm avoiding those LJ entries. Can't wait though!

Title: love in lower case
Author: [livejournal.com profile] passo
Rating: PG
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Tom/Harry
Category: Romance/Humor
Summary: Harry, tired of kissing (and doing other things to) numerous lovers, decides to escape the confines of rated fanfiction. But just when he thinks he's safe, who else but the former bane of his existence arrives to liven up his new, peaceful life.

Recommendation: for people who adore e.e. cummings and something a little bit more original and quirky than your regular run-of-the-mill fanfiction. love in lower case is fun and teasing and adorable and hey, it's also sadly over all too soon. i rarely rec, but i think my flist must be exposed to this.

“you can’t scream. capitals don’t exist here.”
