Someone alerted me to the existence of these series of videos where a group of girls try to recreate the food in The Hunger Games, and I am DETERMINED to make Peeta's Cheese Buns for Saturday when we do our watch party for the Hawks. DETERMINED. Also then I can say I've eaten Peeta's cheese buns because I am twelve years old and very easily amused.

Then I want to try doing the District 11 bread because the ingredients for that look superawesome: poppy seeds, oatmeal, milk, sugar, honey, flax seeds, sunflower seeds... WANT.

I was also talking to someone about food from Game of Thrones and there's a blog/LJ/SOMETHING out there that has recipes from the book too, but those sound like they're better for autumn cooking anyway, and I want to try those too.

Fandom + Food = TRUE LOVE FOREVERRRRRRRR

ETA: My coworker just gave me the bestest idea ever: A Capitol-themed Halloween party!

Things wot I want to try with it:

Lunch with Cinna
Cupcakes on Fire - trolololol how the fuck do I make fondant?
Goose liver and puffy bread
Pasta in Green Sauce
Capitol pumpkin soup
This or this version of the lamb stew with dried plums dish.

Well. Maybe not all at once. I definitely want to do the cupcakes, the pasta, the goose liver and puffy bread, but it probably should be more cocktail-y if it's a Halloween party and not as much meal-y. There's gotta be more colored drinks and shit too. ALSO. Capitol Couture, that'll be FUN. If people don't want to dress up like Effie Trinket we can tell people to dress up in suits and slick back their hair and then we'll hand out a cutout of Seneca Crane's beard SO THERE.

Signing up for another commitment is probably the last thing I should be doing, but [livejournal.com profile] lelek linked to this and I just think this is a ridiculously awesome idea: We Love the Women that Fandom Hates.

Basic idea: pick a female character you think is maligned by fandom in general, and then for an entire week-- from this Friday (September 9) to next Friday (September 16), post about that character daily. Could be a quote, a song, a graphic, a fic, anything at all. Any fandom, any female character.

Even though I'm only nearly done with the first book, and I'm not even at all involved in the fandom, I actually signed up for Sansa Stark. :D I was thinking of signing up for Martha Jones (Doctor Who) and Cho Chang as well, but I don't think I've got enough time for more than one.

But anyway. I think it's a great idea, and you should sign up if you can! :D I think things can get linked to entries [livejournal.com profile] womenlovefest afterward, but yes.
slumber: (house of awesome)
No, really. They are. It's got Olivia Newton-John in it.

AND GAMES WITH DANCE NUMBERS. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WHAT.
slumber: (house of awesome)
If you've been wondering where I've gone these last two weeks, well. I really haven't had much else to say outside of hockey six games left til the end of the season! Upset by Vancouver! Still fourth seed but fighting to keep it! OMGZZZZ I HAVE PLAYOFF TICKETS! so I've stayed away from LJ for a bit. Still reading updates though!

Anyway, I have memes?

For the first one I got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] acidpop25:

Firstly: People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.
Secondly: Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

Twenty Questions )

And this is the more interesting meme (I think, BUT ONLY BECAUSE NO ONE HAS STUMPED ME YET, MWAHAHAHA!): Fuck-Marry-Kill

1. Comment to this and I will give you three people. (Or sets of three, if you like.)
2. Post this meme with your answers.
3. Provide pictures and the names of three people.
4. Label which you would kill, marry, and fuck.

Kim gave me Terry Boot, Brian Kinney, and Barney Stinson. )

Jess gave me Theodore Nott, Terry Boot, and Astoria Greengrass. )

She also gave me Captain Jack Harkness, Ten, and Chuck Bass. )

Then Line gave me Toews, Sharp, and Keith. (Yes, they are Blackhawks players. Shut up.) )
slumber: (house of awesome)

...but I think I'm rooting for Ten in this one. Come on, guys, please vote for him? ALSO, JON STEWART. :DKLJD:LAS:LAJSL HOW IS HE LOSING IN THIS ROUND??? TO CHANDLER BING??????

***

Also, um, remember when I nearly backed out of Azkatraz to go to the Blackhawks convention instead? Well, between Wizziekins being traded and the email I received last night, guess I'll be going after all.

I sent in three programming proposals (in the hopes that perhaps one of them would get picked up), and. Uh. All three of them are now approved? They're not shippy at all, but I hope if you're going to Azkatraz, you'll still consider coming to one of my roundtables for moral support and also because how sad would it be if no one showed up?

One of them will basically be a fangirling session for Blaise Zabini (hey, they asked for minor characters :|), another will be about the post-Hogwarts world and how, like, everything went from there to the epilogue (like, what happened to the remaining DEs? The Slytherins? Who was in charge and how did they make sure no one would do a Voldemort again, etc), and the third is about writing magic in Harry Potter (sort of inspired by this) considering all the weird inconsistencies that JKR seems to have created.

And and and. If you DO want to go and are interested and whatever, I'd appreciate it if you could give me, like, suggestions/ideas for what you'd like to discuss about particularly. Thanks! ♥

Oh, god, LOLing so hard.

So Leaky reports that Tom Felton is, indeed, Tweeting. Here, actually.

So his last tweet he posts this picture: El. Oh. El. (Though it looks like it's from that Sectumsempra scene??)

And he tweets things like:

writing songs in my pyjamas!

and

trying to get in to twitter...its my first day...bare with me! i'm deliberating what film to watch...legends of the fall or the notebook?

d;fkajjf;akjfdafsd. Self-existentialism...

In bed watching The Truman show, freaked me out a bit, starting questioning everything!? Early morning tomorrow, night world x

and regular emo stuff:

Who knows what worries tomorrow could bring, so I shall not dwell in the ones I know.. But revel in the ones I dont.....x

LOLing so hard, you guys.

Meanwhile, I picked up the Red Eye today and apparently Emma Watson got accepted to Yale.

I'm sorry, but all I'm getting out of that is Serena van der Woodsen. :\

afkjg;jafdfjkadsf GUYS. I AM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING BAILING ON AZKATRAZ FOR A BLACKHAWKS CONVENTION. JLF:KJSL"FKA":DLKA":LSDKA":SDLA":SLK

So reveals for [livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut went up last night, and I've got [livejournal.com profile] sparkysparky to thank for the lovely Blaise/Terry fic. :D

This is the first fest I've joined in more than a year, and I'm honestly so pleased with the request I received from [livejournal.com profile] mr_mercutio-- there's no better way to dip my toes (HAH, I actually spelled that Toews :\) back into writing than, erm, diving headfirst into what I'm calling my Slytherclaw agenda. This was originally posted here. Feedback would be so much love, please and thank you! ♥

Title: Salvation by Slytherin
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Nothing, really. Plot, probably, and a disappointing lack of darkness.
Summary: All Terry Boot wants to do is author a book and perhaps rewrite history as wizarding society remembers it, but the Slytherins just won't cooperate. When a civil war erupts and Terry's only chance of escape involves working with a poorly-acronymed rebel group and an army of questionable professionals to take down the largest magical empire in the world, is his potential bestseller really worth all the trouble? (Theodore/Blaise, Draco/Terry, shades of Draco/Theodore.)
Disclaimers: If I owned Harry Potter, it wouldn't be about Harry Potter. Made up facts and figures derived from actual facts and figures found in Wikipedia.
Notes: Though the Slytherins were nowhere in the Battle of Hogwarts in the book, JKR has stated in later interviews that they were, so I've taken that for fact. Much thanks and love to [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte for the beta.

( Salvation by Slytherin-- this way, please! )
slumber: (why do i adore you)
Ahahahahahahaaaaaaaa look. Writing. I forgot to post it here, whoops, but god, it's been a while. :| The last fic I wrote was, what, 2007? It wasn't even for Harry Potter. I have failed so much in fandom. D:

Title: Never the Straight and Narrow
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Draco/Astoria, Draco/Pansy
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~1000
Summary: The problem with Slytherins was that they never did anything in a straightforward manner.
Additional Notes: Muchos gracias to [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte for the beta. Written for the [livejournal.com profile] hp_unfaithful's Fabulous No-Pressure Laissez-Faire Challenge. Prompt: "Why didn't you just ask her to marry you instead?"

( If they wanted to win a Quidditch game, they had to take out the other team's Seeker. )

Concrit would be so welcome, as I am rusty. ♥

PS. Is there, like, an LJ comm for Slytherin-based fics? Because I know one for Ravenclaws, but there are no Ravenclaws in this fic. :|

Three things made me happy yesterday.

  1. The Blackhawks

Liek duh, you guys, but they won against Dallas Stars and swept the series for the first time in 41 seasons asjd;fajskdlf;asdfj THIS IS A SEASON FOR RECORD-BREAKING, OKAY? The Blackhawks already broke a franchise record for the longest-winning streak (it was 8 before, now it's 9), and then they broke a drought in the Anaheim arena and the Shark Tank where the San Jose Sharks (top of the division, they're tough to beat especially at home, even if you go overtime) play, and then against Florida who they haven't beaten since 2002 either, or something, and now Dallas Stars. HELL YEAH. My boys are awesome.

And Patrick Kane apparently got a haircut and it got buzzed all the way when he wanted to "fade it up" so his golden curls are still there but WHO GETS HAIRCUTS WHEN THEY'RE ON ROADTRIPS? That makes no sense at all. NO SENSE.

OH, and they scored 9 points total, right, 3 goals and 6 assists, and you know you've got a fucking awesome team when all those 9 points belong to 9 FUCKING DIFFERENT PEOPLE. CRYING. THIS ROSTER. I LOVE IT SO. NEVER GO AWAY.

  2. My Mystery Cupid

Yesterday I got my [livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut fic!

Forgetting Mandy Brocklehurst. When Terry is left at the altar, he's pushed into going on his honeymoon alone. Except, Lisa has other ideas and is Unspeakable-y sneaky. And Blaise is a closet romantic. (Blaise/Terry; mentions of Terry/Mandy and Mandy/Stephen)

It's Blaise/Terry, you guys, I didn't expect that to be written at all! But it was cute, based off the initial premise of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but with a hotter, sexier Mila Kunis equivalent. :P And mmmmm. Terry. Terry.

Give it a read, and then shower it with love and comments, okay? Okay! :D

  3. Linds!

So [livejournal.com profile] longleggedgit was over in the city for her JET interview (which she totally ROCKED and PWNED and OMG JAPAN) and since she was here we met up for dinner and drinks! Ahahaha, I've never been to Gino's East before but that was cool, deep dish pizza in Chicago (LINE I forgot to tell you maybe we should TRY that the crust isn't like too pastry-ish like it was in Lou Malnati's or Uno's?) ftw! Even though we could only really get one slice because ahahahaha, huge serving.

Then we had $16.50 pitcher beers this is why I don't go out in the city on a regular basis (except to see hockey because that's special, duh) and then we went back to where Linds and her friends were staying to drink and watch the really bad sequel to Grease.

(AHAHAHAHHAHA LINDS IT WAS MICHELLE PFEIFFER.)

Then I went home and crawled to bed and slept til 7am, lol.

I haven't done this in a long, long time (if I've even done it at all. I don't think I have?) but I've been following [livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut this year, and here are a couple of recs for you folks:

Title: The Mending of Things
Author: Anon
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Hermione/Luna
Word Count: 5467
Summary: When Hermione seeks Luna's help for someone else, she gets more than she bargained for.
Review. )

Title: The Last Act of Desperation
Author: Anon
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Word Count: ~5,200
Summary: It is five hours until the end of the world, and Draco has decided to go in search of Harry Potter.
Review. )

Title: A Series of Peculiar Mondays
Author: Anon
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Teddy/Draco, Harry/Draco
Word Count: 7500
Summary: In which Teddy Lupin works harder than he ever has in his life.

Goooooooood morning, Eljay! Lots of fantabulous, fandomy things are afoot! And good things come in threes, so here we go:

  1. [livejournal.com profile] hp_writers_desk

HP Writer's Desk is basically an extended form of workshop that we usually see in HP cons, borne out of the realization that hey, not everyone who writes can attend cons, so why shouldn't people everywhere be unable to discuss the craft of writing, and writing HP fiction in particular?

It's only just been set up and it hasn't got much in it yet, but I've volunteered to help [livejournal.com profile] silver_ariel run it with [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic, and it will begin with planned posts/workshops (though eventually, we'll open it up to everyone-- we're just testing the waters at the moment and would like to familiarize ourselves and everyone with the comm format first). We're looking for ideas and suggestions to have an idea as to what people would love to see on the comm, so go! Join! :D

  2. [livejournal.com profile] bribitribbit is running the The Kisses/Cuddles Battle of 2009, and it is opening up its Prompt Post til February 7 at noon, EST.

    As Brit said:

This is a challenge not only for those rare people who, like me, get really goopy around Valentine's day and want to read tons of fic about their favorite pairings being dorky and cuddly, but also for the people who just want to see their favorite standoffish character kiss his son on the forehead, or two friends hugging after a long fight. Because awwww.

  3. And finally, a FIC REC: Bothersome Things by Anon over at [livejournal.com profile] hp_nextgen_fest.

Yes, it's Charlie/Teddy, and yes, it's Percy/Teddy, and yes, it's pushing 10k words. But this has to be one of the most brilliantly narrated stories I've ever read. Albus pretty much steals the show from Charlie, Teddy, and Percy, but that only shows how well-written this story is, because it's hard not to adore Charlie, Teddy, and Percy here either (and yes, that's a big deal-- I'm normally not a fan of Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs :P). ♥

but asking the flist is so much more fun!

SO! Based on a conversation I'm having with [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte, I would like to know what you--yes, you--would do if the person you are currently seeing (or the last one you were seeing, or someone you would like to be seeing, or the cashier you were flirting with at the store today) ~magically~ switched genders.
  • How long have you been seeing this person?
  • Would you keep seeing this person?
  • Will the relationship stay romantic, sexual, both, or platonic?
  • Do you identify as straight, gay, bisexual, asexual, or something else?

Speaking of gender switching-- is this something that, like, could ~hypothetically~ happen in the Harry Potter universe? In Tales of Beedle the Bard, it's mentioned that Transfiguring a person into an animal is not the same as becoming an Animagus, because Transfiguration makes the object of the spell lose his/her consciousness while an Animagus retains it. So if you can Transfigure a living person into a living being, does that not then mean that you can Transfigure a living person into another living person? (Which, incidentally, renders Polyjuice moot, unless the potion is somehow easier to do or something.)

And really, now that I think about it, this goes into two different discussions, doesn't it?

A. If Transfiguring people into people works, then... )

B. If there is some sort of ~rule~ rendering that theory an impossibility... )

God, Jo. I would really love it if you were more meticulous with how your universe worked, but that would take all the fun out of writing fics, wouldn't it?
slumber: (house of awesome)
I agonized-- agonized-- over which house to be sorted into for Azkatraz (yes, I'm going! post to follow after this one, later this week maybe), and this is basically what it comes down to.

Really, the point of this post is so I can come back to it later on and remember. :| Move along now, move along.

Your result for The Sorting Hat Test...

Slytherclaw

You scored 47% Order/Chaos, and 30% Moral/Rational

Rationality with an orderly/chaotic split. What you strongly know is that you try to be rational, objective, and like to consider things as shades of gray. On order, you see the value of rules and organization but equally can become impatient and advocate a rather loose system. Your strengths arise from your ability to consider both radicals and straightlaced authority objectively; however, it can turn on you when others feel betrayed by the fact that there are few you support unconditionally and consistently.

The 4-grid I used to determine this is as follows:

Chaotic Orderly
Moral Gryffindor Hufflepuff
Rational Slytherin Ravenclaw

So the Terminus bug has sort of stayed, and tomorrow I'm going on a road trip with [livejournal.com profile] alaana_fair, [livejournal.com profile] dramedy, and [livejournal.com profile] scarlet_malfoy to [livejournal.com profile] mijan and [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes' for a fandom slumber party. Of the Midwest variety. Oh, fandom. ♥

From [livejournal.com profile] acidpop25:

1. List your top ten ships.
2. Put all of them in order of your love for them; 10 to 1, 1 being your favorite.
3. Name their fandom.
4. Supply photos for said people.
5. Tag six people. Coming up with the ships is enough. :| But you must all do it!

And in what I tried to be proper order... )
slumber: (a little freak of melancholy)
guys? The HP Lexicon is gone. D: Bring it back bring it back. *cries*

UPDATE: According to this comment it's just changing domains. Keep your fingers crossed!
slumber: (cristina <3 coffee)
Things, things, things, in no specific order:

  • Washington is a pretty city, but I'm not trading Chicago for it. Washington is all neat and proper and appropriate, while Chicago's got this edge to it that HELLO, IS IN BATMAN. :|

  • While American history, as it turns out, doesn't do much for me, I believe I'm acquiring an interest in all things World-War-II-related. :| Like. Everything. The period itself is-- I kinda see what Captain Jack Harkness loves about it so much, and just. Yes. :|

  • This vacation has been grrrrreat. Like, I'm under no stress to omg-see-everything-NOW and as it is also largely unplanned, it has become somewhat a natural occurrence for me to simply stumble into pleasant surprises. My first day it was the Portrait Gallery, yesterday it was the Holocaust Memorial, today it was Jim Henson's gallery at the Smithsonian Castle. I've allowed myself time to sit under the shade of a tree when I so desire to catch up with a book or fill out a crossword, though I've not had the chance to write.

  • Neil Gaiman is going to be in a Chicago suburb this October. I want to seeeeeee. I hope I can. Fingers crossed!

  • I have decided that I am going to try to go to Leaky Con in Boston, because I loved Terminus so much and anyway, I've always wanted to see Boston. Who's with me? :D (I even have ideas for programming, lol)
slumber: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] acidpop25, I nearly forgot to put this up. Erm. I have no scanner, so I took a photo.

Proof that Terminus Does Things to You

Right, so:

  • Invisibility Cloak Nearly Possible

  • The Best Table in the World

  • [livejournal.com profile] terminus_notes - Notes from Terminus by those who attended, for those who didn't. Um. It's bare bones for now, I basically just put in a working structure and stuff, but yes. If you know anyone who was in Terminus who took notes, or at least remembered the gist of the discussions they were in, please see if they would like to share their notes here. I'll put mine up probably after DC. (Speaking of, I'm never going to get anywhere in that place I have absolutely no plans. :|)

Good night, LJ. ♥
slumber: (Default)
SO. I am back at my apartment (to talk to [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte, who is too lame to come to Terminus with me even though she's practically in my backyard-- oh, who am I kidding, Terminus is in my backyard) and thus commences Terminus Day 2 recaps. Or updates, or whatever. Um. (ETA: I started writing this last night, but apparently I was exhausted, because I fell asleep in my apartment. Um. Yeah. :|)

I kind of really really want a comm where people can put up discussion points from their Terminus panels and some such, but like. I think Tai and I were the only ones dorky enough to have been writing notes, like, everywhere. :|

Highlights:
  • Finding out that the one character in the book given the most due process (ie, a trial, an appeal, witnesses and evidence) is actually, um. Buckbeak.

  • Buying a Slytherin sweater! No, really, I have been looking at Hogwarts schoolgirls all this time and being all "I WANT". Except I don't know. We'll see if I can wheedle Bri into being a Slyth again so I'll have someone with me. Yes.

  • Impromptu Wrock thing by The Remus Lupins (Alex Carpenter), who led a horde of fangirls all the way to the park. He is so awesome with his fans. I think I may be a little bit smitten.

Also, um. The Hilton has the most depressing elevators in the world. They have little TV screens tuned in to CNN so in between panels and roundtables and presentations we'd go in and the elevators would tell us that Edwards admitted to having an affair and that Georgia was invaded and the Obama and McCain coverage would be awesome.

But CNN did not tell me that Bernie Mac has died. I found out when I got back home. :(

PS: I have officially overheard something. :P
