I bring forth fairy tale songs/music, because I happened to listen to them today and I thought perhaps it was time to add to that fairy tale playlist I've wanted for so long. :P

SO. If you have any similar songs to share, please feel free to link me. Otherwise, snag these songs. They're brilliant. :D

Also, I am bolding lines I utterly positively adore. Because I'm a dork that way. :|

  1. Eve's Mouth by Alix Olsen - If you're ever going to download anything I've ever uploaded for my flist, download this one. Now. ♥

Eve’s mouth hurts from trying not to laugh
at some joke some scholar made
    about her being someone’s half.
It was a joke, a lie, exaggeration, a fib.
And now you all believe I came from his rib.

    CHORUS
She screams at the top of her lungs:
    "I’m whole! I’m body, I’m heart, I’m mind, I’m soul."

Well, Queen Victoria gave her daughter some advice
as her daughter shook and trembled on her wedding night.
Queen Victoria, she said to her daughter:
"Baby, lie still and think of the Empire!"
And her husband, though kind and mild,
he never stopped to wonder why she never smiled.

Little Red Riding Hood was walking down the trail,
    she was carrying the goodies,
    thought "They’ll go stale".
So, she ate ‘em all up and that was that.
Then, she threw them all up, fear of getting fat.
Cause even Red Riding Hood reads magazines,
the ones prescribing diets for pre-teens.

Now, we’ve got Cinderella, she’s chilling at home
    quite content with being alone.
She is playing with the mice and singing with the birds
and they’re the only ones who ever heard these words.
She said "I’ll get in the damn pumpkin. Do it all right,
weep and lose my slipper, freak out at midnight.
But there’s one thing that the prince might not like,
    it’s the Fairygod I’m after.
    I’m a dyke."

    CHORUS 2x

So we’ve got Snow White, she’s a homemaker of sorts
cause she cleans and she cooks and she takes care of dwarves.
One day, I said "SnowWhite, go back to school".
She said "No, I can’t, I’d feel like a fool.
You know, it’s hard for us womyn to try to be ourselves,
we spend our whole damn lives taking care of little elves.

Now we’ve got Rapunzel, she’s chilling in the tower,
    waiting for the handsome prince
she’s sapped of all her power.
Finally, one day, the handsome prince in town
called up to Rapunzel, "Yo girl, let it down!"
But our dear Rapunzel was nowhere to be seen,
yes our dear Rapunzel had learned something keen.
"All that time alone kinda taught me how to cope,
so I shaved my head and I made me a rope!"

Now, Helen of Troy, they say, launched a thousand ships
with the short of her skirt and the shape of her lips.
And when that old bard lay the blame at her face
for the rape of a nation-
    Wrong time. Wrong place.
Helen simply whispered, "history’s our test.
Look between the lines, girls, Read beneath the text."

    CHORUS 2x
    She screams.

  2. Fairytale by Sara Bareilles - the song that got me started on the playlist. I love retellings and the Mr Charming womanizes angle. :P

Cinderella’s on her bedroom floor she’s got a
Crush on the guy at the liquor store
Cause Mr. Charming don’t come home anymore
And she forgets why she came here.

Sleeping Beauty’s in a foul mood for shame she says
None for you dear prince, I’m tired today.
I’d rather sleep my whole life away
than have you keep me from dreaming

    CHORUS
I don’t care for your fairytale
You’re so worried 'bout the maiden,
though you know she’s only waiting on the next best thing

Snow White is doing dishes again cause what else can you do
    With seven itty bitty men?
Sends them to bed and she calls up a friend, says will you meet me at midnight.

The tall blonde lets out a cry of despair says
Would have cut it myself if I knew men could climb hair
I’ll have to find another tower somewhere
and keep away from the windows.

    CHORUS

Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom, man made up a story
Said that I should believe him
Go and tell your white knight that he’s handsome in hindsight
but I don’t want the next best thing
So I sing and hold my head down and I break these walls 'round me
Can’t take no more of your fairytale love

I don’t care for your fairytale
You’re so worried bout the maiden,
though you know she’s used to waiting
spent her whole life being graded on the
sanctity of patience and a dumb appreciation
The story needs some mending and a better happy ending

‘cause I don’t want the next best thing
no no I don’t want the next best thing.

  3. Hey Cinderella by Suzy Bogguss - a little more metaphorical than narrative, but pretty cool nonetheless.

We believed in fairy tales that day
I watched your father give you away
Your aim was true a pink bouquet
It fell right into my hands

We danced for hours and we drank champagne
You screamed and laughed when I got up and sang
And then you rode away in a white Mustang
To your castle in the sand

Through the years and the kids and the job
And the dreams that lost their way
Do you ever stop and wonder
Do you ever just wanna say

    CHORUS
Hey, Cinderella what's the story all about
    I've got a funny feeling
We missed a page or two somehow
Oh, Cinderella maybe you could help us out
Does the shoe fit you now?

You're older but no more the wise
But learn the art of compromise

Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry
And sometimes we just break down

We're good now 'cause we have to be
We come to terms with our vanity
    Sometimes we still curse gravity
    When no one is around

Yeah, I don't gather dust in the corner of the attic
    Bicycle rusting in the rain
Still we walk in the fabled shadow
    Sometimes we call her name

    CHORUS 2x

    Cinderella (Cinderella)
    Ohh,
    Cinderella (Cinderella)
    Fit you now (Cinderella)
    Oh - Oh - Oh - Ooo...

Driftwood (A Fairytale) by Cursive

So he would sulk and drink and mope
And cross his arms and hope to die.
And then a fairy came one night
To bring this sorry boy to life.
She pulled some strings
And spun him about.
That boy sprang up
And began to shout,
My arms, my legs, my heart, my face
They’re alive!
And she would cry, liar, liar!
What have I done?
You’re no lover, and I’m no fighter.

(the story goes on)

So he would buy her things and kiss her hair
To show he was for real.
And she would take those gifts and kisses
Though just stringing him along.
She knew about those wooden boys-
It’s an empty love to fill the void.
Pinocchio! oh boy, how your nose has grown!
So he would cry, liar, liar!
I’ll prove it to you!
But then it grew - and he walked all night long
’til he was stopped by the shore of the ocean.
But still he walked on, amongst the whales
And the waves, and screamed
Liar, liar!
And his wooden body floated away.
He just drifed away.

And now I wonder how I was made...
My arms, my legs, my heart, my face,
My name is driftwood.
