I wrote How I Married Your Mother for
hp_canon_fest and the reveals went up yesterday so I can now post it in my writing journal and link you to it because I'm a shameless pimper like that. (Although if for some reason this is the third time you saw this post today then I apologize--I don't expect much crossover between this journal,
creativeslumber, and
draco_asteria. :|
The prompt I signed up for was: "Asteria is a criminal mastermind, Draco is her reluctant sidekick. The crime in question could be the heist of the century or something as simple as stealing an apple. Means, motivation, success up to the author."
carlyinrome and
todaythesamesky helped cut out stuff and kept track of my tenses/POV, basically rock star beta work, so ♥♥♥ your way, ladies. :)
Read it (if you want) here, plskthx.
I signed up for canon fest for three reasons:
Tougher than I initially thought, and tbh I think the story kind of drifted sideways for a bit, but it involved Quidditch (which is pretty much how my hockey fandom manifests itself in HP, hah.) and crime and a sort of homage to How I Met Your Mother, which made it a lot of fun to write.
Plot-wise, there's probably something odd about the structure that I wasn't entirely sure I knew how to fix. I think the problem was falling in love with too many ideas (CriminalMastermind!Astoria! Wedding! Quidditch! HIMYM-style narrative!) and trying to weave them all together.
Also, I have a hard time figuring pacing out: how much do I want to establish before the plot starts moving along? I used to write more about general scenarios basically describing a situation (or an eventual, inevitable progression from point A to point B) than something that sort of involved more this-needs-to-happen-to-cause-this-so-this-third-thing-can-be-figured-out kind of stuff, and I just don't know how to structure fic correctly yet, I guess. IDK. Stuff to think about when plotting out my big bang?
ETA: The subject might need explaining: I didn't say this on New Year's Day but my personal goal this year is to write more. So I'm still signed up for three more fests, one of which has already been submitted, another which is more than halfway done, and a third which is going to be pretty challenging but hopefully will be done, sooooo that means I'll be linking more to stuff that I've written, which is in line with that goal. In 2004 I wrote almost 23K words. I stopped writing in 2007 and when I started again in 2009 I wrote somewhere under 15K words. In 2010 I wrote just 8K. This year I'm already up to 15K (only half of which is posted but whatever) and IF big bang goes well, that'll put me up at least 40K. That'll be one thing that I can say I didn't wish I did more of when the year of the end meme comes around again. :|

I signed up for canon fest for three reasons:
- I wanted to write Draco/Astoria but didn't really know what to write about them
- I didn't want to write NC-17 (I just flat out suck at writing it and the less I have to pretend I can do it, the easier life becomes for everyone involved)
- I liked the idea of picking your own prompt instead of getting assigned one
