slumber: (house of awesome)

I haven't read DH since it last came out, and that was through frustrated tears because I had to read it from a bootlegged version because the one I ordered was never delivered on time, so a lot of the details are just fuzzy for me. So! Bullet-point time:

  • McGonagall is so badass. "I've always wanted to do that spell!" LMAO
  • Two Slytherins in the RoR with the DA? Oooh.
  • Dammit, just because Pansy wanted to give Harry up shouldn't mean ALL the Slytherins have to go to the dungeon. Rar. (Yeah, I know, shut up.)
  • Didn't mind the Neville/Luna. Neville's actually really cool and Luna is too.
  • Poor Ginny. They got one kiss and even in the end, it all came down to the Trio anyway.
  • I adored Narcissa here. I know it happens differently in the book, but when she was all "Draco come here" and stalks out of Hogwarts like she's all "K we done here C YA BAI" was just. Hysterical. Also Caroline pointed out the awesomeness of her being basically the only one who STILL managed to have perfectly coiffed hair and smooth robes. She's legit, yo.
  • I have no shame in saying this but I am probably going back to the movies to see the 10 seconds of family time Draco has with Astoria and Scorpius. Astoria is cute, but I barely saw Scorpius. She's all fussy over her baby boy, d'awww.
  • At last, R/Hr!
  • Little underwhelmed by Fred and Remus and Tonks dying. :( Also it looked like Lavender died.
  • SNAPE. HOMG. SNAPE. D:

Weirdly enough, as a H/G shipper, this didn't bother me too much.

Heh, I'm not really an H/G shipper and I've always kind of felt, IDK, that if I did ship them I'd feel a little like I drew the short straw. I liked the scene where she's all "Harry!" and Ron's right behind Harry but she totally ignores him, but she's barely given her spotlight. Yeah, Neville was badass, but Ginny WAS involved in it too--what I liked about DH was imagining how Ginny was also holding down the fort at Hogwarts. IDK, she just doesn't seem like she's been given enough credit or something.

But seriously, what if there were slytherins who wanted to fight against Voldie?? Too bad for them!! It's like saying all Slytherins are Death Eaters in training. (I actually thought of you when she said it, lol)

I hadn't read it since it came out either, and I think it was better that way, with the earlier ones I'd read them so many times that I spent the whole time I watched the movies thinking "well, that's wrong", but this one I could just sit back and enjoy.

Narcissa was freaking awesome.

They really didn't show epilogue Draco long enough - did he have a walrus moustache, or did I just imagine that???

The bit with everyone being dead was sort of just passed over, wasn't it.

SNAPE!!!! How cute was little Snape! I've been out of fandom so long that I don't know if the fic that I need to read is out there, but I really want an epic young life of Snape fic now! I need to know why the hell Lily would pass him over for douchebag James!! Did you SEE what dead James was wearing, wth was up with that????

*sniff sniff* and the thing is, JKR said when Slughorn returned to fight he had Slytherins with him, but neither the book nor the movie explicitly shows this, so guess what? Slytherins are still evil. Meh.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. He looked like he had something scraggly on his chin, yuck!

Kind of like in the book. Poor Remus and Tonks. Poor Fred. You know what, it wasn't even CLEAR that Tonks had given birth to Teddy. All we got was Tonks going all "there's something we want to tell you" way back in part 1, at the seven Harry Potters scene, and then the next mention of it was ghost!Remus being all "someone will tell my son what we died for".

UNF. Snape broke my heart. I don't even know. Poor Snape. James had like. Nothing to redeem himself. D: NO I didn't see what James was wearing, I'll have to keep an eye out for it--we're watching it again tonight, haha, 2D this time :|

Prejudice on all sides: the Potter side treats Slytherins like scum, the Voldie side treats Mudbloods like scum. No winners.

Oh Ginny. I've always felt that she got the short shrift, both in the books and in the films, and never was it more in evidence than in this film. Even in the books, I've always thought Ginny was supposed to be a lot more awesome than we were actually shown she was, and in this film she got something like two seconds of screen time total, so it wasn't exactly a chance to showcase her best side. I felt bad for Bonnie Wright, who deserved more.

Watching character body language in this film is fairly telling: the only female who spends a lot of time in Harry's personal space is Hermione. In fact, in a lot of emotional scenes she's filmed closer to Harry than to Ron OR Ginny, which is a problem when the director tried to sell an epic Hermione/Ron romance to me. I don't really have any shipping loyalties in HP fandom, but to me it looked pretty clear that this film posited that Harry and Hermione had (at the very least) an oddly close relationship. I mean, the final shot is her pressed up behind him against his shoulder, with Ron standing further away and in the background. I'd have rather had a shot of the three of them side-by-side, if they were going for Trio shots.

Rickman fucking KILLED the Snape role in this film. From that opening shot of him standing in silhouette on the tower, to his final death scene, I was impressed. Radcliffe was also notably good, and has grown so much as an actor. I thought that his Harry had some really subtle moments in the film, and he made the most of them. A far cry from the 'bash over the head' acting of the first or second films, and a testament to his maturation as an actor.
Narcissa was indeed awesome. That little shot of her grabbing Draco and marching out of Hogwarts, spine straight, head high, while her husband cowered terrified behind her? Fantastic.

Yep. I feel so bad for the Slytherin house. I mean, yes, they have kids raised to be pureblooded snobs, but the way they're treated makes it seem like ALL Slytherins are bad, and considering the entire theme of the books being about fair treatment for all... that part's just difficult to swallow.

What I liked about her in the book version of DH is that she didn't sit around wallowing for Harry while he was gone--with Neville and Luna, she became something of a kickass leader of the DA, and that was sadly missing in the movie. I don't get into the Gryffindor ships much but I'd have liked to find Harry/Ginny believable.

I noticed that final shot too--firstly that Ginny had blended into the background then cut out entirely, and yeah, that Hermione was leaning towards Harry. Man, don't even get me started on Hermione. I think that's almost entirely on Kloves, possibly Yates and Cuaron too. It's no secret they're more enamored with the idea of Harry/Hermione and they've stated that they like exploring what H/Hr would be like. It shows too, and even though I think JKR is also of the opinion that yeah, Hermione could have gone either way, she was still writing R/Hr.

Snape's like the true hero of this series. ♥

Yes. There were many kickass scenes in the movie--that was definitely one of the biggest ones for me.
