Fandom Terms and Etymology
Feb. 22nd, 2004 09:30 amI'm doing a short report on Friday, and I've decided to do one about the fandom's language, terms, slang, and their etymologies.
So far I have terms like fandom, fanon, canon, slash, femslash, het, fangirl, fanfiction, beta, fic recs, ship, Britpickers, plus acronyms (sort of) like OTP, BNF, etc etc covered, but the question is, which is endemic to the HP fandom and which isn't?
Also, where does the term canon come from? I think I have a clue, but I'm not so sure.
Also, can t00b and schnoogle be explained to me? Do any of you have any more suggestions? It's only a short report, around five minutes, but I'm planning on hand-outs and I'm thinking of picking out the more interesting etymologies to explain to the class. (Can't wait for the looks on their faces when I tell them all about slash... ;P)
Thanks!

Date: 2004-02-21 06:11 pm (UTC)It doesn't say where it's from, though. From the sounds of it it might be from the Catholic church, which has its roots in Latin? I think...? It's either Latin or Greek. I don't know if that helps or not, and I'm sorry for taking up space as I am slightly drunk and not completely sure of the original question.
In which case... I'll shut up now. *Blushes*
