So. Terminus in less than two weeks' time. I'm rooming with [livejournal.com profile] moonlitmercury and [livejournal.com profile] perculious, and I know of a few of you guys who are also going, but-- who is going? Is anybody interested in running into each other at the con? I've got to work on Friday (I'll try to get a halfday though, but I'm not sure about that yet) but yes. Whooooooooooooo is up for like. Meeting up and stuff? And where are you guys going? Like, keynotes and events and stuff-- I know NOTHING about programming and stuff, haha, I was just gonna mosey on along if I could help it. Wrock Chicago attendees? And so on and so forth. Tell me all! :D
slumber: (serious facepalm ala Brian Kinney)
I'm currently reading Eoin Colfer's latest Artemis Fowl book, The Time Paradox, and I really wish one of the characters hadn't been called Jayjay, because if I can stop myself from reading it as Vajayjay I might be able to give it a coherent review or something.

Who'd have thought internet-related work would actually reduce my personal time on the internet? I haven't touched this thing for nearly a month, eurgh. (I have been reading posts, so I am all caught up and stuff.)

Anyhoo, by now I'm sure at least half of you are aware of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. If you aren't, here's a bit of background.

Now, reaction to the series started out strongly positive (minus a few cries of "O-ver-RA-ted!", which we all expected anyway) but it has dwindled into discontent once the third installment came out. Understandably. The story veered into a totally different, yet apparently Whedonesque direction.

I still love it, though. And it isn't just Neil Patrick Harris, it's also-- gosh, so many things.

And because it contains potential spoilers, here under the cut are the 3 reasons why I actually liked the way it ended. )
The way I see it, this isn't the end of Dr Horrible. Whedon came into it looking to circumvent the issues that plagued the WGA Writer's Strike, and you know what, I think he found a way to do it. I wouldn't be surprised (and right now I wouldn't begrudge him) if he milked this for all it was worth.

Here's what I think is coming out of Dr Horrible:
  • DVD with a lot of extras, including a commentary in song
  • an official soundtrack
  • a comic book about Captain Hammer

Here's what I'd love to see:
  • a full-length Broadway production (he sounded like he was joking, but...)
  • more webisodes
  • a movie
  • a TV series (my vote's with this one, but I think Whedon should keep it an iTunes exclusive. How friggin' awesome would that be?)

And with all that they left hanging, with everything they hardly expounded on (see the list of villains credited at the Evil League of Evil), how could they not expand this?

PS. I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, won't see it til [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte comes up here this weekend, so I'm avoiding those LJ entries. Can't wait though!

Pseudo-movie marathon today:

Okay. First of all, I came into Prince Caspian thinking, for some weird reason, that it was The Horse and His Boy, so understandably I was a little upset when Caspian did not bicker with a girl and married her just so he could continue bickering with her.

Other than that, it was fine-- a few 'eh' moments, but whatevs. I wouldn't have posted about it at all, though, if not for sheer love of Edmund. Edmund! Goodness, what's happened to him? He annoyed me to no end in the first movie and now he's all. Dark and brooding and funny and the abso-fucking-lute best one of the lot! I ♥ him so. I ♥ him so so much.

"I know. You had it sorted."

Eeeee.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall, meanwhile, was not what I expected it to be. It's a bit all over the place but I guess that's because it's not meant to tell a smooth story. That, or something was wrong with our projector at the cinema. :| But it's cute and kind of scandalous sometimes, but it's almost realistic. Almost.

What're the better movies you've seen recently? Line and I might end up watching What Happens in Vegas soon-- anybody seen that yet?

I have moved from my dorm to an apartment! \o/ And because I'm a cheapskate, I moved everything myself (nearly everything-- my roommate helped lug an extra luggage bag for one trip, and I took a cab to move my desk and my mini-fridge) so I've been moving since May 10.

Well, not really. I moved stuff around for a few days, and today I got the last of my stuff from the dorm and now I can rightly say that I have ~officially~ moved.

And my apartment is made of so much ~WIN~!

Exhibit A. The View

I am such a dork, I know; click if you want to humour me )

I would show you my kitchen but that's even more boring than this. :| But yes. Suffice to say, I am very very pleased.

California has legalized gay marriage.

By the afternoon, gay and lesbian couples had already started lining up at San Francisco City Hall to make appointments to get marriage licenses.

Unlike Massachusetts, California has no residency requirement for obtaining a marriage license, meaning gays from around the country are likely to flock to the state to be wed, said Jennifer Pizer, a gay-rights attorney who worked on the case.

I love how it fits. :D

It is utterly tragic that my first thought upon seeing who was:

"CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!"

I am still not over that. And I still haven't gotten around to watching the Skins season finale.

And I am not processing anything beyond "CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!" right now. :|

ETA: I almost hate to say this, but despite initial apprehensions, I always end up liking the new companion so much more than previous ones. :|

Line ([livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte) and I saw Kate Nash in concert.

yeah you make me merry make me very very happy )
And if you've never heard of Kate Nash...

Here are some of her songs )

life updates I'm recording just for posterity's sake, or, you know, if anyone was wondering what I'd been up to these days:

  • Internship - I think I got one. I say I think because I've not heard word from my employer since I told them I'd love to work with them. It's unpaid work for 40 hours a week beginning as soon as the spring semester ends and ending just before the fall semester begins. Should be a fairly interesting learning experience. (That's what I call them-- learning experiences.)

  • Apartment - Never talked about it here, not really, except for that one time I ranted, but I've found an apartment and roommates who seem okay, so that's all well and good. We're all three of us squeezing into a one-bedroom (they share the living room, and the bedroom is all mine) in a high-rise lake-view condo fifteen minutes from downtown, three blocks from the nearest train station. I am so excited.

  • Chicago - I'm loving this city more and more each day. This Friday [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte and I are going to Looptopia (and trying to stay out all night long) even though next week is like, hell week. It's not like this happens more than once a year, though. (Finals, meanwhile, happen far too often.) Plus, we're going to see Kate Nash (also going to see Made of Honor, lololol cannot wait). I can has Friday nao plz?

I'm tired a lot of the time, but I'm mostly pleased about how things are going.

'Sup, flist?

I would actually pay to see this movie. :| I WANT I WANT I WAAAANT. *dies laughing*
slumber: (Mini-skirt love)

I really find this amusing.

The Skirt Mousepad-Cover: no actual purpose but for the lulz, I imagine.

See it in action! )

So [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte and I were coming home from a less-than-stellar play, and in the intersection before the guest suites we were staying we were stopped by some dude and a couple of cops. Why?

They were filming a movie, and a helicopter and The El were involved, and they didn't want anyone under the El tracks while the helicopter was flying below regulation, almost just above the El.

It flew right over us, and when we got to the guest suites, Line actually saw the helicopter land on top of the train. (Or, you know, it looked like that from where we were, and we had a pretty good view. They must have timed it precisely.)

So. Freaking. AMAZING.

The guy said the movie was called "The Unborn", but I think it's closer to, oh. The UnBourne?
slumber: (give me euphoria)
Free is my new favourite word, and Craigslist Free Stuff my new favourite place.

Okay, so there's a lot of junk there, but I just picked up a free ticket (two free tickets, actually, and if [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte had come here a day earlier we'd have been able to see it too, since we considered watching it before--but that's okay, because tomorrow we're watching a play about Mrs Zabini, hahaha.) to see Altar Boyz.

To be fair, the musical looks like it's on its last breath in the city (the last show date is March 16) because the theater, which was smallish to begin with, was only 70% filled, maybe less. I had excellent seats too--sixth from the front, dead center.

And Altar Boyz itself--hahaha. I probably would not have paid to see it (not even $45), but it was hilarious. And gay, sort of. And hilarious. I ♥ Luke. And Abraham.

Free. I'm still waiting for the catch.
slumber: (lalala)
I bet you are--so let me help you!

This is a logic puzzle challenge thing that I picked up from random-LJ-surfing. It apparently consumes your life until you solve it. Time yourself for fun! :|

The rules are in Japanese Chinese, but I picked up a nifty translation too!

  • Everybody has to cross the river
  • Only 2 people on the raft at a time
  • The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence.
  • The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's presence.
  • The thief cannot stay with any family member if the Policeman is not there.
  • Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.
  • To start, click on the big blue circle on the right.
  • To move the people, click on them.
  • To move the raft, click on the poles on the opposite sides of the river.

I finished in about fifteen minutes, but mostly did it through trial and error. This time of night is no time for logic, obviously.

sort of.

Some dude created MUSIC out of windows sound effects. amaze.

And now, for February. Not quite as productive as January, but I've less travel time this month.

pour le mois du fevrier:

  1. Mirror, Mirror by Gregory Maguire

Last month's review of 1001 Nights of Snowfall reminded me that while I loved fairy tale stories, there was one I hadn't quite read yet. I think I finished this while I was waiting for my stitches to be removed in the hospital. Anyway. I quite adored this, but it isn't the best Snow White adaptation I've read. I might have preferred Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by a margin, as well, but this is nonetheless awesome speculative historic fiction.

  2. Truth, Lies, and Advertising by Jon Steel

Hi, yes, marketing geek here. (I did say I wanted to grow up to be Brian Kinney. :|) I read this because, well, like the absolute nerd I was, I decided to get the readings assigned by a professor in a class I wanted to take but couldn't. And this was it. And it was interesting. (Of course, I've forgotten everything in it, but I can remember they were very interesting. And funny.)

  3. 2,239 Tested Secrets for Direct Marketing Success by Denny Hatch and Don Jackson

I read this for a grade, which I guess is okay, since I got an A in the end, but other than that, I found this utter crock. It's basically just some dude hunting down every book on direct marketing there ever was, taking the chapters or rules or whatever is outlined, and compiling it into one bound volume, occasionally sprinkling it with original comments. Yeah. No. :|

  4. Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions by Dan Ariely

I now know why I love this book. It is exactly like Blink. :| But still all in good fun; I love things that have rational explanations for human behavior--perhaps I should get a Masters in Behavioral Economics, but I'd only want to use it for evil marketing. Read this if you're interested in human behaviour though.
slumber: (tragedy)
I thought that campus shootings had truly ended in the 90s, that we've heard the last of them and Virginia Tech was simply an aberration. But 7 people have now died in Northern Illinois University, just ten months since Virginia, apparently, and it's just. Short of doing bag checks at every entrance of a campus to ensure our own safety, this is really the kind of thing that no one can predict, let alone prevent. (Do you really think it's a matter of reaching out to the potential gunman in your class? Someone somewhere will tick in a way you would never see coming, I think, and we're all fucked up one way or another and it's just a matter of how we cope, and this is just where others' coping leads, sometimes.)

The thing with tragedies like this is that they should not be happening this frequently. I want to know what's going wrong but I'm inclined to think that these things remain senseless and that there are no answers.
slumber: (GA: I need a drink)
considering I've got an appointment with health services to take my stitches out and I'm having a cup of coffee with a couple (I third-wheel even here! I should write a book. Titles can be Third-Wheeling is an Art Form, Tales of the Third Wheel, Three's an Awkward Crowd, etc etc. ) AND a presentation to stress over tonight, as well . AND the professor is taking the class out to the nearest bar and paying, something I am keen to do with a vengeance as this class was all kinds of suck and stupid.

So yeah, not today. Screw the world, I'm following my own schedule.

For the rest of you, though, do enjoy today's warm fuzzies.
slumber: (god has a sense of humour)

i cut my finger on a can of soup (campbell settlement, here i come!) and had to get stitches in the ER in the middle of the night, in my flaming pink hello kitty pajamas, and now my finger is all dressed up so i either look like i'm perpetually giving someone the finger OR i bought the newest attachable toy from babeland.

happy chinese new year, folks.
