There are only 300 cabs in Pittsburgh

I booked late on a weekend when both the Pens and the Steelers were playing, so the only hotel I could get to was the one by the airport. I decided that maybe taking a cab was the easiest way to get to the arena, so I had one called for 6pm. It was 15 minutes late. Then, coming back from the game, it was late for 35 minutes. My phone had died by this time so I walked to the nearest hotel to wait for a cab.

I left the game at 11pm. I got on a cab at midnight.

And at this point, as there had been NO CABS to meet the demand of people who wanted them, I ended up with a town car service.

$78 to get to the hotel.

My flight here cost about that. :|

The town car driver was nice though; we got into a discussion with how the city basically fails with treating its weekend tourists because those service businesses that tourists need (like hotels and cabs) basically don't earn anything on the weekdays so it's a bit infeasible for more establishments like them to pop up or something.

If I get enough money I'm investing in a town car service in Pittsburgh. It's a legit way to extort people. :|

Mellon Arena isn't THAT bad

Granted, it reminded me more of the Allstate Arena (where the Wolves play), but I can dig that. And there were a few Hawks fans and maybe it's a function of me being female but I didn't get heckled all that much. It may have been because I sat beside an old couple and a young couple who didn't seem like hardcore fans.

My seats were pretty good; got to see a lot of the action. Somehow the fights kept happening by my side. :| I'm not sure what was up with them, but it was amusing to see.

VERSTEEG!

Is it possible to get a jersey with the exclamation point at the end? Because I could be coaxed into doing that, ahahaha. He was great.

I got to watch warmups for a bit. Would have had a few great photos if not for my camera failing. Urgh.

And I've got to go. Boarding. Free wifi from Google rocks!

Patrick Sharp, why are you so hilarious?

Tonight we have our team meal, coaches, staff and players. We're going to kind of get things kicked off with a nice meal, then I'll go home. I'm going to fire up my computer and try to talk to my girlfriend and maybe even my other girlfriend, Adam Burish.

Just. IDEK. BWAHAHAHAHA. God. These boys. Urgh.

Edited the next day, because LJ was lame: Sobbing. I don't know what I love best in this video-- the random naked Seabrook, Bollie lifting the bag to cover his face BECAUSE PATRICK SHARP IS A FUCKING PAP, the ear tickling (wtf?), the Finnish seagull, what Khabby's been doing with all of his money ("It's one of a kind-- looks like he's got two of them" ahahaha Seabs you lovable fool), camera flirtation with Tazer (PULL HIS PIGTAILS MOAR, SHARPY), THE LOOK OF LOVE, Soupy being his own comedian-- and I just summarized the whole video.

I have decided that if there is a heaven, my version of it would involve just watching these boys 24/7, on and off the ice. That is all.

Eight years in debate is enough for me to know that there is a way I can argue for the release of Polanski. There is a way, because of technicality, because of jurisdiction, whatever else, that his arrest may have been technically fumbled.

I can find an argument for it, but that doesn't make him any less deserving of arrest, of justice. Because what's lawful and what's just are not always the same thing, and giving him a free pass for achievements that are irrelevant to what he did is careless and ignorant. Am I missing something? Because I don't understand how people could even think to stand behind this man.

  • Hosted my first ~dinner party~ today, ahahaha, and besides a mostly empty bookcase toppling over when it was nudged by one of the guests, and the smoke alarm going off because I left the pizza in the oven too long, it went pretty well. My carbonara thingy was a little too dry by the time people started arriving, and I don't think we had enough soda (but too much booze :|) buuuuut my cake was a hit and I ended up giving all of it away by the end of the night but that's okay. Now I know how to make it! (And properly this time.) \o/

  • I woke up this morning to find out about a freak typhoon that hit the Philippines-- two cities in particular that had whole subdivisions and whatnot submerged under water. Called my parents but they were already asleep, which at least meant they were safe. At dinner tonight my parents called back to let me know what was going on; the worst that happened was they weren't able to go to my grandmother's 80th birthday and my brother had to sleep at his campus overnight because they were sort of stranded there. But otherwise everybody's fine.

  • I tried getting into Friday Night Lights once, a long time ago, but somehow the beginning of the first ep dragged on too long for me to bother with. Anyway, I took to watching it again, and it's really pretty compelling stuff. Sometimes it gets overly dramatic but really, good stuff. I wish I knew this during the summer, when there were like ZERO shows on, though. Now I have to squeeze it in between Desperate Housewives and Gossip Girl and Merlin and House and HIMYM and Glee and hockey and fantasy too, and RPing and so on and so forth. Never been so glad to no longer be a student than now.

The Context

I scored free tickets to watch a television taping of The Fray and Jack's Mannequin on Monday. It is a 2 to 2.5 hour thing starting at 8pm, waaaaaaay up north where public transportation will not reach it. I can take a cab part of the way there, really, and on the way back, which will likely cost quite a bit. Although I do not really know the area well and am not sure how often cabs go 'round there?

So now I am thinking of just. Not going.

Why I Should Go

When else am I going to see both those bands?

Why I Am Thinking of Not Going
- No one is free to go with me
- I don't know how viable my mode of transportation (cab) is

Urgh. Make my decision for me?

For those at work and cannot therefore click on the link (what are you doing on LJ??), let me highlight choice bits from the description (bold, italics, underline, blink are mine):

Updated by popular request... Yes the The Vamp retains hot and cold temperature. Toss it in the fridge for that authentic experience.

JUST IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN! Who doesn't love those dark and mysterious vamps on the screen and in the books we all thumb through lustfully? That's what we thought. For those of us who fantasize about being spellbound and tantalized by the forbidden comes The Vamp. We promise this vamp won't be the only thing coming for you in the night.

[...] Don't be surprised if this toy seduces you, its long sleek shaft and deliciously ridged head calling to you in the twilight. But don't save this for just nocturnal escapades, try taking our Vamp out in the sunlight and watch him sparkle.

Just.

WHY?

So I totally went to Hulu to look for something funny to watch and ended up with Zombie Girl. It's a documentary about a 12-year-old girl called Emily Hagins who was making a zombie feature film.

It's pretty cool, actually; the movie was finished, and she was 13 when it premiered in Austin, TX. She is now in post-production for her second movie, The Retelling.

She also just learned to drive a car, probably, which I still haven't learned to do, and I'm nearly 23. :|

Anyway, I ordered a DVD of the movie she made (Pathogen-- and her website sucks, idk why she doesn't just use Wordpress or something to straighten it out) out of curiosity and some small desire to support her. I mean. I don't even know if the movie sucks or not-- it's the novelty of a kid going through the whole process (writing, directing, producing and editing) a film, really.

I kinda like knowing awesome things like this happen.

Possibly the best inconsequential part of Halfblood Prince for me was at the start of term, while students were headed to their classes, and McGonagall goes:

"Mr Davies, that's the girl's lavatory."

I <3 you, Roger.

A little over a year of living at my apartment and I've only just now figured out exactly how close I live to the gorgeous lakefront (and park, and Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium, and Field Museum). People, it is walking distance! And in the summer it is absolutely gorgeous. Sobbing, how did I completely miss this??

Sometime this week I will probably take a walk (or a jog! LOL) around and take pictures, weather-permitting, or something. I need to picspam this because next summer, if things fall into place (or David Bolland onto my lap, who knows), I might end up closer to the United Center.

And then next weekend, before San Fran, we're doing a staycation-type thing-- bought a City Pass already-- and act like tourists in Chicago. (Have you seen the glass ledge on the Sears Tower? Fuck, I am all over that like white on rice!)

Summer in Chicago, I have missed you!

A note to movie-makers who have barely any ounce of original thinking left and feel a need to go back to classics to rework and remake what previously successful franchise they could find and buy the rights to (so, everyone):

THIS is how you rape canon so hard and so good she'll end up spreading her legs most willingly for you and beg for more, more, oh god yes more please!

So the April Fools' fest is up, and I managed to submit something just in time. For posterity's sake, I'm linking to it from here. (Is it ironic to anyone else that I can barely write femmeslash, but struggle in drawing slash?)

Gay marriage gets legalized in Maine:

"In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions," Governor Baldacci said. "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

Dudes. Did somebody step on the Gay Agenda Gas Pedal, and where can we go to shower him with rainbows and shiny sparkly awesome things?

Fun Fact (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] ccharlotte's internet skillz): If you're on LJ, you don't need to ask for a Dreamwidth invite code. Dreamwidth will email one to you!

Follow this tutorial and Dreamwidth will email you with an invite code in a few hours. (As though it is even surprising, you may find me there as slumber.) Not that, you know, I've even kept up with it-- I'm not exactly sure what makes it the new go-to place, but there you go. Have fun!

This above made it to this week's PostSecret blog post. I looked at it and the first thought I had was, "How is this a secret?"

And... I have no further thoughts beyond that.
