Title: Five Stories Astoria Greengrass Did Not Write
Pairing: Zacharias/Astoria
Prompt: I resent your misguided understanding of things you don't understand.
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~1400
Summary: Zacharias Smith works in the News department of The Daily Prophet. Astoria Greengrass is in Features. Zacharias has a hard time figuring out what that means.
Author's Notes: Originally posted here. Cross-posting to LJ and DW (I think I'm retiring [profile] creativeslumber).

'Features, Smith. I write features. Human interest, interviews, etcetera. Annabelle Cowley answers the letters addressed to Annabelle.' )

I'm almost certain that LJ is going to recover from this, but I'm not so sure that they won't get attacked again. So to cover all my bases, I'm slumber here, on Dreamwidth, and on IJ. Let me know if you're there too, on either one really, and I'll add you wherever.

And if you could also let me know what communities are in which platforms, I'd much appreciate it.
slumber: (yikes again!)
It's been so difficult to work with the last couple of days. So far I'm queued up at Dreamwidth to import all my entries from this LJ to the Dreamwidth one. I think I'll also be importing my fic journal over there. Grr.

In other news, anybody interested in beta-ing my [livejournal.com profile] hp_zombiefest entry? (PS. Sign up now!) It's 75% done, will be under 4K, gen, involves Harry, Luna, Theodore, Zacharias. I should have it ready by the weekend, maybe sooner--I just want to get it out of the way so I stop distracting myself with it. I'll need help with SpaG, phrasing, possibly structure although I think I'm okay with the way I have it set up right now, and maybe title choices? Mira Grant and Max Brooks are my zombie influences, in case that's important. PM/email me if you're up for it, and I'll be grateful forever! ♥
slumber: (house of awesome)
...but the minimum word count is only 500, and it's about zombies.

AND I don't have to go off any of the prompts listed if I didn't want to, so it's basically anything goes.

AND I think I have an idea or two for it.

AND it'll be a good break from [livejournal.com profile] het_bigbang, which is kicking my ass in all the worst possible ways.

[livejournal.com profile] hp_zombiefest - where HP and zombies collide
Sign-ups begin July 25th, 2011

AND come on. It's zombies. How can I say no to that?
slumber: (house of awesome)
Can I just reiterate my absolute adoration for Harry/Luna? I think they're fantastic together. Harry's so fucked up and Luna just gets that, same way that Harry's been able to figure out her quirks and just sort of roll with her oddities. (Doesn't help that the H/G scenes just look so FORCED.)

I've never read any Harry/Luna fics though. Problem is that Luna is such a difficult character to write. Anybody have any recs? I might go through the [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom tags.

PS. I love this movie. It's somehow lighthearted and dark all at once. I forgot how many EMO!Draco scenes existed here--he's always brooding in a corner or something--and UNF, that scene with Narcissa and Bellatrix in Snape's house! And yet at the same time it's like Harry, Hermione and Ron all discovered they've got hormones. Which is like. ABSOLUTELY the worst time to get them, arc-wise, but whatever.

PPS. And Blaise is quite fit. I couldn't be happier with that casting, truth be told.

PPPS. Who are those twin Slytherin girls? They're creeping me the fuck out. ETA: Mystery solved! According to [livejournal.com profile] bitchet, they're the mysterious Carrow twins. They look like they were cast for the movie specifically, and they even have Harry Potter wiki pages.

has a YouTube channel.

Also somehow looks like DanRad.

HMMMM.

Shouldn't be amusing me as much as he is, but. There you go. :|

No, and far from it. BUT.

July 10:

25688 / 25000 words. 103% done! +5864

Best weekly total yet! Yay.

Week-by-week, in reverse )

So, that's out of the way. Now to, you know, finish it. Did I say I was 75% done? I actually haven't reached the end of the third part yet (there's four parts) so who knows how long's this gonna take, and every time I say "Okay, and then in the next scene THIS will happen" it takes about three more scenes before the aforementioned event even takes place.

*tears at hair*

Whatever.

Randomly, I want to read a scene where the Doctor picks up a Harry Potter character (Pansy Parkinson, for laughs) as a companion and takes them inside the TARDIS, and she's not impressed that it's bigger on the inside because wizards have the ability to do that too. This scene exists somewhere already, right?

So watching the HP movies start to finish beginning with the Christopher Columbus (was that actually his name?) ones yesterday (Side Note: I am so annoyed all over again at the way SS/PS ended--the Slytherins had won the House Cup and were CELEBRATING, the banners ALL OVER THE GREAT HALL, and then their ex-Gryffindor Headmaster starts awarding an INSANE AMOUNT OF POINTS TO GRYFFINDORS TO MAKE THEM WIN. Sorry, that is NO WAY to teach an entire school of impressionable young minds ANYTHING, except that yes, no one likes you if you're in Slytherin and no matter what you do the entire year to earn points, you don't get rewarded if three students decide to go on a rule-breaking lark and defeat evil one of seven times--who decided defeating evil was worth those points anyway? When Harry and Ron did the troll in they got what, five points apiece? That's ridiculous, that is.), and I just started wondering:

How does Platform 9 3/4 work?

We know you basically have to run into a wall and you emerge on the other side on a completely different platform, but the one thing that's always been a hallmark of JKR's world was how so many of the things that Harry experienced at the beginning of the story were later explained in greater detail, to show that they were part of the bigger picture and not just a one-time thing.

The Leaky Cauldron was hidden in the same way Grimmauld Place sort of was (I think)--normal people saw both buildings on either side of it, but those who knew what to look for could see it too. The Floo is obviously one of the more common means of transportation, and the Portkeys were useful as plot device as well. Even Dumbledore's Deluminator made its appearance as early as the first chapter, and the Vanishing Cabinets were another form of magical transportation that we saw on two separate occasions.

Is Platform 9 3/4 a version of the Vanishing Cabinets or is it its own kind of magic? It doesn't seem to be like the Cabinets in that it doesn't exactly pop up in another place altogether--when Harry and Ron took the Ford Anglia to go to Hogwarts, somehow they managed to pick up from King's Cross and onto the Hogwarts Express tracks and caught it in no time. So... how does this magic work? Does it lead to a different location in the same area, like underground, maybe, where wizards can go?

More importantly, is this magic only applicable to Platform 9 3/4? Where else did we see this in HP? What other ways could wizards use it? Getting into the Ministry of Magic involved a variety of clever ways that wizards could cross over from the Muggle world into the magical, but do any of those include whatever was used for Platform 9 3/4?

Also, is that the only way anyone could access the Hogwarts Express? Gotta admit, it's easy enough to believe that Muggles could very easily ignore it when a boy runs straight into the wall and seemingly disappears, but. Can you imagine September 1? How many students at Hogwarts must be at King's Cross that day doing the same thing within a concentrated period of time and not be noticed?

I don't know. What do you think?

So my Glompfest fic for [livejournal.com profile] serpentinelion got posted, hurray! While I know I've sort of gone off H/D in fandom, it wasn't until I signed up for this that I realized I haven't written H/D in seven years. Also, that the stories I have written were horrible, so. Ew. :|

But the H/D fandom has always been my first love, and I know many of you from there, so really, despite no longer shipping H/D as actively as I once did (via board discussions if not actual fiction) it's always going to have a special place in my (mostly) Slytherin-worshipping heart. Fiction Alley, Guns 'n' Handcuffs? When we say we go way back, it is actually true now. Seven years. That's ridiculous.

Anyway, here's a link to the fic. (Notice the side dish of Slytherin shippiness. I just can't ever stop. Blaise/Pansy is a real ship for me now too. Hm.)

I. I have been watching Million Dollar Decorators and there's this guy--Ross Cassidy?--who is so HOT and pretty and just looks like a very posh gay Draco Malfoy and *makes grabby hands* so pretty. His Google Images results don't show anything decent so I can't in good conscience link you to them. Just take my word for it. :|

II. Het Big Bang is going along, and actually I've made quite a dent in terms of word counts yesterday and today. Only it's so odd and random and I'm fairly sure it's going on the cutting room floor because it's such a weird scene that it's freaking me out a bit... I'm not sure that it's moving the plot forward, but it is kind of amusing to write? It's just that tone of amusement that's worrying me too, because it's kind of not in the spirit of the story so far? But. Words. Are. Being. Written. So whatever.

III. Seriously. If you've ever LOLed at fandom, go read the Sherlock meta fic, like, five hours ago. It is amaze.
slumber: (house of awesome)
Here's a rec for Sherlock Holmes meta!fic.

From [livejournal.com profile] starsparkle333's journal:

The prompt: Sherlock is a well-known fanartist whose online antics always land him on fandom_wank. John's a beloved BNF fanfiction author. They meet at a convention; geeky love ensues.

What ended up coming out of this was a long fic about fandom, wank, and community. There are actual journals made for all the characters. [livejournal.com profile] holmeschat is a real thing now. There are twitter accounts, devArt accounts, and a TVTropes page.

EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL.

Anyway, here are the links to all the parts of the fic on the kinkmeme. Definitely read through all the comments for more fun things. I have plans to go poke through all the associated journals tomorrow.

Hockey post forthcoming. Non-hockey flisters be warned. :P

The off-season (summer to some, hockey drought to me, har har) is always a bit of a struggle. Well, not entirely--this summer I've got a ton of things to keep me occupied (thank you, Big Bang, and Lollapalooza, and the three times I have to fly out of the city for work) but the NHL schedule has been out for a while and that's always a good reason to start planning for road trips for the 2011-2012 season, amirite?

Anyway, yesterday's free agent frenzy (sign one, sign all! we'll ink you just to reach the salary cap floor!) shuffled teams around just enough to create a few more epic games that I think I might be able to pull off.

Behold, my wish list of road trips:

  • Game: Hawks @ Sharks, Hawks @ Ducks, Hawks @ Kings -- The Thanksgiving Road Trip
    Date: Nov 23, Nov 25, Nov 26
Must-See Factor: I can take or leave the CA teams, but that schedule seems epic-road-trippy to me. Isn't as fun without a few good friends to go with, and I probably have to find a couple of people who aren't into the whole Thanksgiving thing.
Pipe Dream or ActualFAX I-am-booking-travel-plans-as-we-speak Happening? I actually know two people who might be interested in going, though one of them is probably only showing up for the SoCal leg of the trip. San Jose is the tricky part of the equation. I'm not comfortable enough with driving to know if I'll be able to drive the six hours south, and I'm not entirely sure how much the plane tickets + hotel will cost so I think I'll need to figure out the logistics first before I can commit.

  • Game: Hawks @ Blues
    Date: December 3, Saturday
Must-See Factor: These games are always, ALWAYS a riot (sorry, do the Canucks own that word now?) and with ~tougher~ Hawks coming into Scottrade...
Pipe Dream or ActualFAX I-am-booking-travel-plans-as-we-speak Happening? No brainer. St Louis is cheap and near and fun, and the only reason we couldn't go last year is because they had no Saturday home games against the Hawks. This trip is happening.

  • Game: Flyers @ Penguins
    Date: December 29, Thursday
Must-See Factor: Flyer!Jagr and Flyer!Talbot visit their former team for THE FIRST TIME EVER this season--are you KIDDING me? I'm not even a fan of either team and I wanna be there for the fireworks. Plus, I said I wanted to visit Consol, and the Pens host the Hawks on a weekday.
Pipe Dream (1) or ActualFAX I-am-booking-travel-plans-as-we-speak Happening (10)? December 29 is in the middle of a holiday, so getting time off work isn't even an issue. Caroline would be in Philly around that time visiting her parents, and they may lend her their car so we can drive to Pittsburgh for the game. I'm going to put this on an 8.

  • Game: Jets @ Panthers
    Date: Feb 3, Friday
Must-See Factor: Blackhawks North versus the new Blackhawks South? Like someone pointed out on Twitter, I can totally go wearing Hawks stuff. I won't be out of place at all! And while the Panthers didn't catch my attention even with Kopecky and Skille (because, well, they're Kopecky and Skille), having Soupy and Steeger both just kind of. Makes me like them a little bit more.
Pipe Dream or ActualFAX I-am-booking-travel-plans-as-we-speak Happening? A couple of things probably need to fall in place for this to happen. I'm not entirely convinced I'd make the trip myself, but if there were other people who'd like to come with, I probably would.

  • Game: Hawks @ Red Wings
    Date: April 7, Saturday
Must-See Factor: It's the last game of the season, and also Caroline's actual birthday. And going to Detroit completes our tour of the Central Division (which may not exist after this season!) so there are a lot of things going for it.
Pipe Dream or ActualFAX I-am-booking-travel-plans-as-we-speak Happening? This is the best excuse we'll ever have to go to Detroit.

Not sure if I'm missing any other epic trips. Since April 2009 (I think it was 2009, at least) I've wanted to return to Colorado, but they don't host the Hawks on a weekend this year. They do host the Capitals on a Saturday (Varlamov versus his old team?) but meh, I don't really care about that angle as much.

Three more months. :|

Title: Unsettled
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Theodore/Susan, Oliver/Katie, some Theo/Daphne and Neville/Hannah
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~3100
Summary: The war is over, but it doesn't feel like it's truly ended.
Additional Notes: Written for the community at [livejournal.com profile] hp_spring_fling. Many, many thanks to my beta, Ashvarden, who helped shape and prod this into readable form. The request I had asked for a tone more somber than I was used to writing, and this had been an interesting exercise in restraint versus... whatever its opposite was. Erm. So yeah.

( The Nott Manor had never been one to inspire feelings of cheer and fuzziness. )

One day I will remember why I decided to create a second journal to post all my writing to. :\

  • [livejournal.com profile] het_bigbang is plugging along, but I think I'm officially blocked. I know what comes next, but not really how to write it. It could be because I spent the last couple of days in San Francisco and have had very little sleep and just need to step away for a bit, but. I don't know. It also doesn't feel like I'm at the halfway point of the story yet? Which could be a problem.

    June 19:

    14594 / 25000 words. 58% done!

  • Pottermore

I have tickets to an evening showing of Deathly Hallows part 2. I'm mildly interested in what JKR has to say about the houses as per the Pottermore announcement. I would be disappointed if she ~ruined~ what's canon in my head by saying things about some characters that I didn't have in mind, but at the same time, the characters I like are minor enough that I don't think she's going to screw them up further. And the one time she touched a minor character, it was Blaise Zabini and I kind of loved what she did with him. It's not quite "In JKR I trust" but it'll do.

  • NHL Schedule

Lots of bullet point stuff here. Kind of disappointed we won't be going to the Wild on a Saturday, even more disappointed that the home-and-home opener is against Dallas as opposed to the Wings, when the Hawks/Wings have traditionally opened the season in at least the last three years.

St Louis on December 3 will be on a Saturday, though, as will Nashville (twice, even: January 21 and March 31) and the last game of the season in Detroit, April 7 (also Caroline's birthday!) so doing two out of four possible road trips will be pretty good.

Not related to the schedule, but NHL-centric: WHOA FLYERS. WHOA.

First man 'functionally cured' of HIV:

There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.

And from the local CBS in San Francisco:

“One element of his treatment, and we don’t know which, allowed apparently the virus to be purged from his body,” he observed. “So it’s going to be an interesting, I think productive area to study.”

Volberding continued, “Knock on wood, (Brown) hasn’t had any recurrence now for several years of the virus, and that hasn’t happened before in our experience.”

As a result, at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation some are now using the word “cure” after so many avoided it for decades.

“You sort of felt like you couldn’t say ‘cure’ for a number of years. Scientists and clinicians and people with HIV alike felt that was a promise that was never going to be realized and it was dangerous to direct a lot of energy toward it,” said Dr. Judy Auerbach. “And now things have shifted.”

I wrote How I Married Your Mother for [livejournal.com profile] hp_canon_fest and the reveals went up yesterday so I can now post it in my writing journal and link you to it because I'm a shameless pimper like that. (Although if for some reason this is the third time you saw this post today then I apologize--I don't expect much crossover between this journal, [livejournal.com profile] creativeslumber, and [livejournal.com profile] draco_asteria. :|

The prompt I signed up for was: "Asteria is a criminal mastermind, Draco is her reluctant sidekick. The crime in question could be the heist of the century or something as simple as stealing an apple. Means, motivation, success up to the author."

[livejournal.com profile] carlyinrome and [livejournal.com profile] todaythesamesky helped cut out stuff and kept track of my tenses/POV, basically rock star beta work, so ♥♥♥ your way, ladies. :)

Read it (if you want) here, plskthx.
